Accession 658The Women in Crisis Program Records consists of the records of the Women in Crisis Task Force on Battered Women, part of the Family Counseling Service and travelers Aid in Greenville County, South Carolina. The Women in Crisis Task Force on Battered Women was organized in October 1977 by the Family and Counseling Service to study the special problems and needs of women who are victims of domestic assault. “The Task Force [was] composed of representatives from thirty organizations and agencies with the Greenville community, and met with law enforcement, legal, social service and counseling agency representatives to learn about the problem as it occurs on the local level.” The collection includes minutes, financial records, correspondence, and research on domestic violence. Also included are newsletters, journal, and magazine articles, as well as newspaper clippings associated with family problems. Especially interesting in this collection is information relating to the Women’s Crisis Counseling and Emergency Shelter including the handbook used in operation of the shelter outlining rules, regulations, and procedures.

Accession 272The South Carolina Federation of Women's Club was organized on June 15, 1898 in Seneca, SC and was admitted to the General Federation of Women's Clubs on July 29, 1899. The Women's Club is one of the oldest nonpartisan and nondenominational women’s service organizations in the country which strives to unite diverse women in a single goal to improve the lives of others by bringing about cooperation between the many women's clubs in the state. The South Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs Records consist of a retrospective 10 year history of the formation and early years of the SCFWC, constitutions and bylaws, correspondence, annual reports , minutes, program notes, financial records, yearbooks, directories, speeches, bulletins, magazines, newspaper clippings, and memorabilia. More than half of the collection consists of SCFWC yearbooks, and the South Carolina Clubwoman magazine and its predecessor, the Keystone. These provide a rich source of information on women’s history throughout South Carolina. The records also provide some information on the General Federation of Women’s clubs and the various state organizations which make it up.

She was married to journalist and politician William Douglas Workman Jr. and the mother of former mayor of Greenville, SC, William Douglas Workman III. The Heber Rhea Thomas Workman Papers consist of correspondence, reports, resolutions, minutes, membership lists, newsletters, and newspaper clippings relating to Mrs. Workman’s tenure as Winthrop College Alumni Association President and to the history of Winthrop alumni-administration relations.

Accession 1109The Paul D. Workman Photograph Collection consists of photographs taken by Rock Hill, SC resident and WWII veteran Major Paul D. Workman (1900-1968). Maj. Workman was the nephew of Winthrop founder and first president, David Bancroft Johnson (1856-1928) through Dr. Johnson’s half-sister Florence Nance Workman (1872-1940). The collection consists of 168 slides, 5 negatives, and 76 photograph prints. Most of the images are of Rock Hill, SC and are of spring scenes including Glencairn Gardens and other gardens, the Rock Hill Centennial Parade in 1952, local businesses, Sullivan Middle School (formerly Rock Hill High School, the Southern Rail Road, and the Elks Club of Rock Hill.

Accession 410These records were microfilmed by the South Carolina Historical Society through the cooperation of the South Caroliniana Library at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, under a grant from the South Carolina Committee for the Humanities as part of the grant titled “Genealogy, Community & Identity: Finding Local Roots.” These records represent the efforts of WPA field researchers who collected information on the history and records of approximately 2,500 South Carolina Churches in the late 1930s, including black congregations. The records include work forms, typed reports, newspaper clippings and short histories. The information pertains to physical descriptions of church buildings and grounds, pastors, types of records kept by the church and where kept, and information on any published or unpublished histories. The fiche is arranged within the county, only a listing.

Accession 1045 - M469 (520)This collection consists of a Diary of Gladys Terriberry: American Army Nurse, France, 1918 which was transcribed with historical background by David J. Riley. It is a transcription of a diary of Gladys Terriberry (1888-1975) who was an American U.S. Army nurse who was stationed at a base hospital in France during WWI. The Diary covers the period from February 7, 1918 through August 11, 1918. Gladys was stationed in Chaumont in the Marne Valley at the Base Hospital No. 15. She mostly wrote about "more pleasant activities and friendships" instead of "the horrors of the war."

Several of the 91 photographs are stamped Joe Azer who was a local photographer. The collection consists of many images of Winthrop College events, scenes, people, and buildings and includes May Day events, WTS football team, the Blue Line with Pix Theater, Winthrop bands, and many other images of campus and student life. Also included are Rock Hill scenes including parades going down Main Street in downtown Rock Hill. There are also 55 negatives mostly of pageants and festivals in the area including in Chester, SC, Clover, SC, Pageland, SC, and Lowrys, SC.

In 1976 the Rock Hill Board of Realtors became the York County Board of Realtors and, in 1977, the organization was incorporated. The York County Board of Realtors, Inc. Records consist of correspondence, constitutions, bylaws, minutes, financial records, reports, program notes, reference manuals, membership records, newsletters, newspaper clippings, bulletins, and pamphlets. The records are a good source of information not only for those doing research on the York County Board of Realtors, but for those researching the South Carolina Association of Realtors.

Accession 826The York County Confederate Enrollment Book collection consists of 2 duplicate rolls of microfilm purchased from the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. “S.C. Statute 1902 (21) 1033-1034 authorized the listing of Confederate veterans by township and county. Enrollment committees in each township were responsible for recording names in a township volume. The township books were filed with the clerk of court who created from them a county enrollment book. In some counties, this series consists of the township books; in others, the county enrollment books; and, in some instances, both county and township enrollment books.
This series consists of listings of American Civil War veterans from the county by township and/or county. Information includes town of residence, name of veteran, company, regiment, brigade, arm of service (cavalry, artillery, or infantry, plus whether regular, volunteer, or militia), rank, age, place of death (if deceased), reason for death (disease or wounds), close of service (discharged or surrendered), and remarks (transfers, promotions, and whether currently living or dead).”*

Accession 823This collection consists of two microfilm rolls of records related to York County Confederate Veterans’ Pension applications. The first role consists of York County, SC Board of Honor (Confederate Pensioners) Approved Pension Roll Book from 1896-1963. The second roll consists of York County Board of Honor (Confederate Pensioners): Confederate Pension Application Papers for Veterans from 1919-1929; Confederate Pension Application Papers for Widows from 1919-1938; Confederate Pension List from 1945-1964. These rolls were purchased from the South Carolina Department of Archives and History where the originals are housed.

Accession 829The York County Court and Intermediate Court Journal collection consists of microfilm copies purchased from the South Carolina Department of Archives and History of plat books for York County, SC from 1786-1792. The South Carolina Department of Archives and History describes the collection as consisting “the day-to-day record of the proceedings of the county and intermediate court. Information generally includes the date and place of meeting; names of presiding justices and officers elected; dockets of civil and criminal cases giving names of jurors and defendants, case summaries, and disposition; lists of jurymen, taverns licensed, and road supervisors appointed; and matters pertaining to the proving of wills and other functions of the office of the ordinary under the jurisdiction of the court.”
The Microfilm is organized in two parts on the roll of microfilm. The first part consists of copies of the original documents and the second part consists of typescript copies of the originals.

Accession 827The York County District Court Records collection consists of 2 duplicate rolls of microfilm purchased from the South Carolina Department of Archives and History where the originals are located. The rolls consists of copies of the Names, Offenses, Dispositions, and the Court Term for each case tried in York County, SC during the 1866-1868 sessions. Many of the offenses include larceny, assault, battery, “bastardy,” “hog stealing,” “Cow stealing,” “Killing a cow,” “bigamy,” etc. Included are scans of original documents of the cases including warrants, pleadings, motions, memoranda, and verdicts.

Accession 1464The York County Historical Commission was created in 1959 initially to preserve and maintain a former York County plantation at Brattonsville then in a dilapidated state. The Historic District was listed on the National Register in 1971 and named Historic Brattonsville. In 1997, the Museum of York County in Rock Hill, SC, and the York County Historical Commission merged to create the York County Culture and Heritage Commission and has broadened its mission to “communicate and preserve the natural and cultural histories of the Carolina Piedmont, inspiring a lifetime of learning.” The York County Historical Commission Records consists of the Friends of Historic Brattonsville records, a manual of operations and policies of the York County Historical Commission, reports, bylaws, correspondence, memos, agendas, financial records, McCelvey Center Planning records, and meeting minutes of the York County Historical Commission.

Accession 405The York County Hospital of Nursing Records consists of the general records of York County Hospital School of Nursing. According to the organization’s Constitution, the objects of the York County Hospital Nursing Staff Association “shall be to incorporate into this association the Policies and standards set by the Nursing Profession; which shall be to establish and maintain a code of ethics among Nurses; to further all means aiming to elevate the Standards of the Nursing Profession; to mature means for educational advancement; to promote happy working conditions and to exercise the art of constructive discussion.” The records consist of the constitution and by-laws, faculty and staff minutes, various reports, correspondence dealing with accreditation recruitment, Winthrop University, US Public Health Service, SC League of Nursing, and National League of Nursing. Records related to the students include personnel files, which include correspondence and relating to nursing assignments, faculty impressions of candidates, health records and applications, curriculum, extra-curricular activities, catalogues, and commencement exercises. YCHSN was discontinued in 1962 when curriculum and standards of the school were under study for revision.

The publication also details the history the Palmetto Branch (1936), the York Public Library (1915), the Clover Public Library (1944), the Traveling Library (1937), and the Fort Mill Library (1964).

Accession 186The York County Multiethnic Heritage project, administered by Dr. Joyce Pettigrew Berman of Winthrop’s English faculty, was made possible by a $38,000 grant from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare of the U.S. government. The purpose of the project was to study the total contributions of ethnic groups to the total cultural heritage of York County School District No. 3, the York County Nature Museum and the city of Rock Hill Recreation Department. The project, which began in July 1976, and ended June 30, 1977, focused on ethnic groups in the area: Southern Appalachian, African-American and Native American. The collection includes a wide variety of material that could be used for research on York County and for instructional purposes by teachers. The collection consists of magazines, newspaper clippings, books, audio tapes, video cassettes, slides, transparencies, and copies of historical documents such as letters and land records.

Accession 237The Children’s Nature Museum of Rock Hill, South Carolina (now called the Museum of York County) opened in 1950 as a result of a community effort led by the Junior Welfare League, to create a cultural opportunity for area children. The York County Nature Museum Records consist of bylaws, correspondence, legal and financial records, promotional materials, awards, and publications relating to the development of the museum in Rock Hill. These early organizational and developmental records were collected by Margaret Josephine Brandon Snypp (1908-1998) during her tenure as chairman of the Children’s Nature Museum Committee of the Rock Hill Junior Welfare League, secretary of the Nature Museum’s (then named Rock Hill Children’s Nature Museum) Board of Directors, and treasurer of the Nature Museum.

Accession 828The York County Plat Book collection consists of microfilm copies purchased from the South Carolina Department of Archives and History of plat books for York County, SC from 1802-1879. The South Carolina Department of Archives and History describes the collection as consisting “of the commissioner's recorded copies of the plats returned to him by the deputy surveyor. A plat is a map drawn to scale of the land surveyed. Information recorded on each entry includes the names of the prospective grantee, deputy surveyor, and, often, surrounding landowners; the boundaries, acreage, and natural features of the land surveyed; and the dates of the warrant and survey. Volume G contains plats relating to the granting of the Catawba Reservation land.”
The Microfilm is organized on two rolls of microfilm. Roll one consists of Part 1 (Old Book A-C) 1802-1817 and Part 2 (Old Book D-F) 1817-1840. Roll two consist of Book G (1841-1879).

Accession 549The York County Lease Holders Land Plat Map (69 ¾” x 48”) consists of a partial listing of people to whom grants of land, located in the Catawba Indian Boundary, were made by the commissioner of locations for York District, South Carolina during the years 1841-1842. Other grants were made upon expiration of leases as late as 1855 to surviving heirs, assignees, and transferees of earlier leaseholders. This map was prepared by Mr.& Mrs. J. Thomas Williams, Sr. from existing information obtained from plats on file in the York County Courthouse as of July 30, 1983.
