Manuscript Collection

The Winthrop University Manuscript Collection (over 1800 collections) contains unique private papers donated to the Archives by individuals and records from organizations and businesses. These collections not only document local, regional, and state history, but also transcend South Carolina’s borders to include collections that are of broader historical interest. Genealogy is a prominent theme within the collection with these collections containing valuable family history information, including genealogy charts, family histories, scrapbooks, letters, diaries, wills, grants, indentures and biographical data. Much of the material is unpublished and varies in quantity and content from collection to collection.

    The J. Thomas Williams Reminiscence was a seventeen page article by Joseph Thomas Williams, Sr. (1915-2005) entitled, “A Flavor That Made a ‘Good Town’ Better.” This paper, which Williams dedicates to the late Talbot Patrick, contains some interesting anecdotes concerning the history and growth of Rock Hill, SC.

    The Linda Williams Collection primarily includes memorabilia featuring the art work of Vernon Grant collected by author, educator, and school administrator Linda Driggers Williams (Winthrop Class of 1964, ‘69, ‘80). Contents of the collection includes items such as posters, Come See Me buttons, Christmas cards, magazines, books, prints, and advertisements. There are many toys featuring the illustrations of Vernon Grant as well. For example, there is a xylophone, a record player, pick-up-stix set, and paper dolls. Also included is a Hershey’s mascot doll, plate, and mug; a Rice Krispies bowl, mug, and plate; and a Rice Krispies jigsaw puzzle. There are also copies of Linda Williams’ book, Beyond Snap™, Crackle™ and Pop™, the Story of American Illustrator Vernon Grant, as well as letters of correspondence concerning its creation and copyright permissions. Other material included in the collection includes, Linda William’s Do’s and Don’ts Etiquette book, and some personal correspondence.

    The Miriam Williford Papers consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, lecture and teaching materials, research notes, professional files, rough notes and drafts of publications, copies of historical manuscripts from other repositories, and other Papers, The collection pertains to Willifords’ teaching and publishing activities, and to her involvement with professional organizations and seminars such as the Latin American Studies Association (1975). Her research files include extensive material on Jeremy Bentham and his interest in Latin America, and includes correspondence with Simon Bolivar and other leaders of Latin American independence; papers on the administration of Mariano Galvez, Chief of State of Guatemala from 1837-1838, including a complete file of Boletin, the official government newspaper; and material on liberalism in Latin America from 1820-1840.

    The Anne Edna Willis Lewis Collection consists of materials collected by Anne Edna Willis Lewis (1902-2001) during her academic career at Winthrop College from 1921-1925. She graduated as part of the Winthrop Class of 1925. Her collection consists of 11 reports cards, 2 photographs taken at her 50th reunion, and a scrapbook containing photographs, programs, correspondence, tickets, invitations, newspaper clippings memorabilia, and commencement programs. A Winthrop scholarship was named in her and her husband’s honor titled the Anne W. Lewis and Robert M. Lewis Endowed Scholarship to assist academically talented students with financial need.

O. Watson. This publication consists of an address delivered by Rev. Emory Olin Watson concerning the history and evolution of education sponsored by Methodists in South Carolina. The speech includes topics concerning early education in South Carolina, early Methodist education, education of African-Americans, Methodist academies and colleges, and the education of women. Also included is a list of the officers and the minutes of the meeting of the Historical Society.

    The James Russell Wilson, Sr. Papers are a valuable source of Lancaster County, South Carolina history, with a focus on Indian Land history. James Russell Wilson, Sr. (1885-1979) owned a large amount of land in Lancaster County and there is a substantial amount of titles, deeds, and other records of real estate transactions dating back to 1887. There are also a number of quite precise plats and maps. Mr. Wilson’s papers could be of genealogical interest.

    This collection consists of a program from a dinner commemorating the Hundredth Anniversary of the Birth of Woodrow Wilson, who was the 28th president of the United State, sponsored by the City of Columbia and the State of South Carolina held at Hotel Columbia on December 28, 1956. The dinner was attended by several notable South Carolinians including Columbia, SC Mayor J. Clarence Dreher, Jr., South Carolina Governor George Bell Timmerman, Jr., and former South Carolina Governor James F. Byrnes. President Woodrow Wilson lived in Columbia, SC from 1870 to 1874 while his father was a professor at the Columbia Theological Seminary.

    This collection consists of microfiche copies of a narrative diary handwritten by the owners of Windsor Plantation and Kensington Plantation both located on the Eastern Branch of the Cooper River in Berkeley County, South Carolina. The diary begins when Dr. John Beaufain Irving (1800-1881) bought Windsor Plantation in November 1840 for $2,000. Dr. Irving later bought Kensington Plantation in March 1846 for $6,900. The narrative diary records the purchase and refurbishing of the two plantations, summations of work done each year, the purchase of slaves, lists of slaves owned, and the reasons for certain decisions. There is a separate list of slaves that includes the Name, Description, How Obtained, and years Born and Died (1842-1858) following the narrative Diary. The slave list appears to be maintained through 1872. Although the regular entries ceased in 1852, they resume in 1886 after the Kensington was purchased by Greene, Dillenbeck, and Smith and continue through 1888. The diary mentioned many prominent names in the area including Huger, Corbett, and Harleston.

Birth and death dates are not included.     The collection consists of various artifacts obtained from the Winthrop University Farm Excavation conducted during the Fieldwork in Archaeology class directed by Dr. Christina Brooks and Darwin Ramsey, Spring of 2008. The artifacts consist of glass jars and bottles, pots, bowls, building materials, sherds, and other materials found at a dig conducted near the Aragon Cotton Mill in Rock Hill, SC near what is now known as Winthrop Farm. The Aragon Cotton Mill employed 275 operators and the associated mill housing had 450-500 residents. The collection also contains various printed photographs, student papers, display cards, and photo displays from the class exhibit.

    The Robert C. Winthrop Letters Collection contains six personal letters of Robert C. Winthrop (1809-1894) lawyer and philanthropist who was the benefactor and namesake for Winthrop University. In this collection, there is an invitation to a gentleman for lunch, a thank you note, an accepting to an invitation, and a request for Abraham Lincoln’s autograph.

    The Winthrop Centennial Album Photograph Collection consists of copies of photographs of Rock Hill, South Carolina and Columbia, South Carolina that were used in Winthrop’s pictorial history in 1986. Included are seven photographs: two photographs of Strawberry Hill Plantation in November 1897; one photograph showing the making of a street in Rock Hill, SC around 1890; one photograph showing white horses pulling a chariot in a parade in Rock Hill, SC; one photograph showing a map of North and South Carolina in 1882; one photograph of the Columbia Opera House; one of a Columbia, SC street scene depicting children and animals.

    This collection consist of memorabilia collected by Harry Withers related to his visits to the White house for holiday celebrations during President George administration in 2004. The collection includes an autographed Easter egg from the White House Easter Egg Roll in 2004. The collection also includes a program titled, A Season of Merriment and Melody: Holidays at the White House which includes a welcome note from President George and First Lady Laura Bush, descriptions of decorations throughout the White House, and illustrations by illustrator Elise Primavera. The collection includes a Christmas Greeting Card with President George Bush with Harry Withers and his wife, Jan and a second personalized and autographed greeting card with First Lady Laura Bush with Harry and his wife, Jan with the White House Christmas Tree in the background.

    This collection consists of family history information about the Withers/Weathers Family and includes many narratives, essays, and anecdotes of family members, genealogical information and notes, copies of photographs, newspaper articles, deeds, maps, and other records related to the family which were compiled by John S. Withers, Jr. Included are sections titled “Withers Family: Family Members,” “Withers Family: Withers Homes,” “Withers Family: Feasterville Connection,” “Withers Family: Sarah Withers and Friends,” and “ Withers Family: Miscellaneous Papers.” The majority of the collection pertains to the Withers and Weathers Family, but there is some information about the Meador and Walker Families as well. The collection covers the family from the 1600s up through 2007, but a majority focuses on the family from the Berryman Hicks Withers (1818-1875) line and the family mostly from North Carolina (Gaston County) and South Carolina (Chester County, Fairfield County, and York County).

    Winthrop University's connection to the Withers family as Sarah Withers (1873-1955) who was a Winthrop graduate and the first principal of the Winthrop Training School (the building was renamed in her honor as W.T.S./Withers Building in 1969) is the Great Aunt of John S. Withers.

    This collection consists of research material like photographs, negatives, correspondence, an Evening Herald newspaper section, a thesis proposal, and an oral history project relating to Nancy Biggs Thomas Wofford (Class of 1967, 1984) and her 1984 thesis titled, Fort Mill: Transition from a Farming to a Textile Community, 1880-1920. The photographs and negatives depict the Fort Mill Manufacturing Company (or Springs Industries, Inc.) and the local townscape during the early 1900s; an identification sheet accompanies the fifty photographs. The photographs are photographic copies of the originals owned by Ruth Meacham (1895-1987) (see Ruth Meacham Interview – OH 369 in which Ruth and the interviewer, Nancy Thomas, discuss each photograph as well as life in Fort Mill at the time). The photographs depict downtown Fort Mill, businesses, houses, the Fort Mill well pump, train depot, Fort Mill Academy, Fort Mill Manufacturing Company, 1916 flood, train tracks, cars, fire engine, bridges, Catawba Power Company, and many other Fort Mill scenes. Also included in the collection is a report of Thomas’ oral interview project includes a summary of the project which consists of ten interviews of local mill workers in Fort Mill. Included are indexes of the interviews.

    The Woman’s Club of Rock Hill Records consists of documents that detail the general history of the organization, history on the building fund project, history on Rock Hill, accounting notes on the yearly budget for the organization, a copy of the constitution and by-laws of the organization, information regarding the Eugene Smith Award and Diamond Jubilee year, and two yearbooks. In addition, there are blank copies of various forms used internally within the organization.

In addition, there are blank copies of various forms used internally within the organization.

The Woman's Club of Rock Hill Records consist of constitutions and bylaws, histories, minutes, reports, correspondence, memoranda, program notes, brochures, newsletters, membership lists, yearbooks, questions, certificates, awards, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, and photographs. The records also relate to the thirteen affiliated clubs comprising the Woman’s Club of Rock Hill: Amateur Arts, Arts Appreciation, Book Discussion, Book Lovers, Crafts, Hearthstone, Hermitage, Home Study, Lantern, Literary, Outlook, Palmetto, and Politeia, and to other records for the South Carolina Federation of Women’s Club and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. Records of various organizations not directly related to the Woman’s Club of Rock Hill are also included, such as the Tri-County Parents Without Partners, the Rock Hill Community Council, the Rock Hill Model Cities Commission, the Rock Hill Senior Center, and the South Carolina Conference on the Status of Women.

    The Junior Woman's Club Girls' Home Records details the establishment and operation of the Rock Hill Girls Home by the Junior Woman’s Club of Rock Hill, SC. The records consist of minutes, correspondence, promotional material and newspaper clippings documenting the history, purpose, and the progress of the Girls Home sponsored by the Junior Women's Club of Rock Hill. The Rock Hill Girls’ Home opened in 1972 under the sponsorship of the Junior Woman’s Club and there primary goal was to reunite troubled girls between 12 and 16 who need short-term counseling with their families.

    The Women in Crisis Program Records consists of the records of the Women in Crisis Task Force on Battered Women, part of the Family Counseling Service and travelers Aid in Greenville County, South Carolina. The Women in Crisis Task Force on Battered Women was organized in October 1977 by the Family and Counseling Service to study the special problems and needs of women who are victims of domestic assault. “The Task Force [was] composed of representatives from thirty organizations and agencies with the Greenville community, and met with law enforcement, legal, social service and counseling agency representatives to learn about the problem as it occurs on the local level.” The collection includes minutes, financial records, correspondence, and research on domestic violence. Also included are newsletters, journal, and magazine articles, as well as newspaper clippings associated with family problems. Especially interesting in this collection is information relating to the Women’s Crisis Counseling and Emergency Shelter including the handbook used in operation of the shelter outlining rules, regulations, and procedures.

    The South Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs Yearbook (1924-1925) describes the activities and accomplishments of the Federation during the previous year and reports on various subjects.     The South Carolina Federation of Women's Club was organized on June 15, 1898 in Seneca, SC and was admitted to the General Federation of Women's Clubs on July 29, 1899. The Women's Club is one of the oldest nonpartisan and nondenominational women’s service organizations in the country which strives to unite diverse women in a single goal to improve the lives of others by bringing about cooperation between the many women's clubs in the state. The South Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs Records consist of a retrospective 10 year history of the formation and early years of the SCFWC, constitutions and bylaws, correspondence, annual reports , minutes, program notes, financial records, yearbooks, directories, speeches, bulletins, magazines, newspaper clippings, and memorabilia. More than half of the collection consists of SCFWC yearbooks, and the South Carolina Clubwoman magazine and its predecessor, the Keystone. These provide a rich source of information on women’s history throughout South Carolina. The records also provide some information on the General Federation of Women’s clubs and the various state organizations which make it up.

    Heber Rhea Thomas “Dimples” Workman (1918-1988) was a 1937 graduate of Winthrop College and was an English professor at Columbia College from 1957 to 1977. She was married to journalist and politician William Douglas Workman Jr. and the mother of former mayor of Greenville, SC, William Douglas Workman III. The Heber Rhea Thomas Workman Papers consist of correspondence, reports, resolutions, minutes, membership lists, newsletters, and newspaper clippings relating to Mrs. Workman’s tenure as Winthrop College Alumni Association President and to the history of Winthrop alumni-administration relations.

    The Paul D. Workman Photograph Collection consists of photographs taken by Rock Hill, SC resident and WWII veteran Major Paul D. Workman (1900-1968). Maj. Workman was the nephew of Winthrop founder and first president, David Bancroft Johnson (1856-1928) through Dr. Johnson’s half-sister Florence Nance Workman (1872-1940). The collection consists of 168 slides, 5 negatives, and 76 photograph prints. Most of the images are of Rock Hill, SC and are of spring scenes including Glencairn Gardens and other gardens, the Rock Hill Centennial Parade in 1952, local businesses, Sullivan Middle School (formerly Rock Hill High School, the Southern Rail Road, and the Elks Club of Rock Hill.

    These records were microfilmed by the South Carolina Historical Society through the cooperation of the South Caroliniana Library at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, under a grant from the South Carolina Committee for the Humanities as part of the grant titled “Genealogy, Community & Identity: Finding Local Roots.” These records represent the efforts of WPA field researchers who collected information on the history and records of approximately 2,500 South Carolina Churches in the late 1930s, including black congregations. The records include work forms, typed reports, newspaper clippings and short histories. The information pertains to physical descriptions of church buildings and grounds, pastors, types of records kept by the church and where kept, and information on any published or unpublished histories. The fiche is arranged within the county, only a listing.

    This collection consists of a Diary of Gladys Terriberry: American Army Nurse, France, 1918 which was transcribed with historical background by David J. Riley. It is a transcription of a diary of Gladys Terriberry (1888-1975) who was an American U.S. Army nurse who was stationed at a base hospital in France during WWI. The Diary covers the period from February 7, 1918 through August 11, 1918. Gladys was stationed in Chaumont in the Marne Valley at the Base Hospital No. 15. She mostly wrote about "more pleasant activities and friendships" instead of "the horrors of the war."

Also included are some newspaper clippings relating to the Civil War and its aftermath. One clipping provides General Wade Hampton’s account of General William T. Sherman’s destruction of Columbia.

    The York County Photograph Collections of photographs and negatives from 1940-1953 primarily from York County. Several of the 91 photographs are stamped Joe Azer who was a local photographer. The collection consists of many images of Winthrop College events, scenes, people, and buildings and includes May Day events, WTS football team, the Blue Line with Pix Theater, Winthrop bands, and many other images of campus and student life. Also included are Rock Hill scenes including parades going down Main Street in downtown Rock Hill. There are also 55 negatives mostly of pageants and festivals in the area including in Chester, SC, Clover, SC, Pageland, SC, and Lowrys, SC.
