Scope and Content Note

The York County Confederate Enrollment Book collection consists of 2 duplicate rolls of microfilm purchased from the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. “S.C. Statute 1902 (21) 1033-1034 authorized the listing of Confederate veterans by township and county. Enrollment committees in each township were responsible for recording names in a township volume. The township books were filed with the clerk of court who created from them a county enrollment book. In some counties, this series consists of the township books; in others, the county enrollment books; and, in some instances, both county and township enrollment books.

This series consists of listings of American Civil War veterans from the county by township and/or county. Information includes town of residence, name of veteran, company, regiment, brigade, arm of service (cavalry, artillery, or infantry, plus whether regular, volunteer, or militia), rank, age, place of death (if deceased), reason for death (disease or wounds), close of service (discharged or surrendered), and remarks (transfers, promotions, and whether currently living or dead).”*
