Scope and Content Note

The Women in Crisis Program Records consists of the records of the Women in Crisis Task Force on Battered Women, part of the Family Counseling Service and travelers Aid in Greenville County, South Carolina. The Women in Crisis Task Force on Battered Women was organized in October 1977 by the Family and Counseling Service to study the special problems and needs of women who are victims of domestic assault. “The Task Force [was] composed of representatives from thirty organizations and agencies with the Greenville community, and met with law enforcement, legal, social service and counseling agency representatives to learn about the problem as it occurs on the local level.” The collection includes minutes, financial records, correspondence, and research on domestic violence. Also included are newsletters, journal, and magazine articles, as well as newspaper clippings associated with family problems. Especially interesting in this collection is information relating to the Women’s Crisis Counseling and Emergency Shelter including the handbook used in operation of the shelter outlining rules, regulations, and procedures.

Provenance

The records of the Women in Crisis Program were donated to the Archives on September 23, 1985 by Anne Bellew.
