Scope and Content Note
The York County Historical Commission was created in 1959 initially to preserve and maintain a former York County plantation at Brattonsville then in a dilapidated state. The Historic District was listed on the National Register in 1971 and named Historic Brattonsville. In 1997, the Museum of York County in Rock Hill, SC, and the York County Historical Commission merged to create the York County Culture and Heritage Commission and has broadened its mission to “communicate and preserve the natural and cultural histories of the Carolina Piedmont, inspiring a lifetime of learning.” The York County Historical Commission Records consists of the Friends of Historic Brattonsville records, a manual of operations and policies of the York County Historical Commission, reports, bylaws, correspondence, memos, agendas, financial records, McCelvey Center Planning records, and meeting minutes of the York County Historical Commission.
Provenance
The York County Historical Commission was given to the Archives on September 5, 2013 by Barbara Kurz.
