Accession 897 - M411 (462)This collection consists of booklets containing reminiscences, anecdotes, and recollections of the American Civil War. The collection includes Army Letters of Personne 1861-1865: News from the Front which was issued monthly by Frederick G. De Fontaine in 1897 and published by the War Record Publishing Company of Columbia, South Carolina. Personne was the pen name of de Fontaine who had been a correspondent and had published several newspapers in South Carolina during the war. Also included is The Southern Soldier Boy: A Thousand Shots for the Confederacy by James Carson Elliot of Co.F 56 Reg North Carolina Troops, CSA of Shelby, North Carolina. This booklet published in 1907 contains a history of Co. F. Reminiscences of the war including tales of Petersburg, Point Lookout Prison, Andersonville, Appomattox, and other remembrances by fellow soldiers.

Accession 586This collection consists of six journals written by David Golightly Harris (1821-1875), concerning his life as a upcountry farmer and slave-owner who owned and operated his 100-acre farm in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. During the American Civil War he was pressed into service on the part of the Confederacy and served with the South Carolina 5th State Troops Co. G. During his absence his wife Emily Liles Harris (1827-1899) managed their ten children, ten slaves and the farm while dutifully describing the difficulties of a southern woman operating a large farm and caring for her large family during the Civil War. Also included in this collection are photocopies off correspondence and bible records relating to the family’s history. A videotape on Mrs. Fordis on file in the South Carolina Humanities Resource Center.

Accession 1217The Johnston Family Papers consists mostly of material genealogical in nature. This genealogical material was accumulated by Andrew D. Johnston with much being handed down to him by family members. Also included is genealogical research conducted by Mr. Johnston and by Patricia Andrews Johnston Treadwell. The research includes Family Tree Makers files, pedigree charts, descendant reports, ahnentafel reports, family unit charts, grave records, family narratives, published genealogical materials, marriage announcements, and obituaries. The prominent family names are Johnston, Huber, Nesbit, Stassen, Wiedderecht, Glass, Briegel, and Boese. Also included in this collection are the personal papers of Thomas Jefferson Johnston, Burdette Francis Johnston, Emily Nesbit Johnston, Robert James Johnston, and Huber Family Papers. Thomas Jefferson Johnston (1837-1894) fought in the Union Army in Company C, 11th Regiment Iowa Infantry, Belknap’s Iowa Brigade, XVII Corps, Army of the Tennessee and the collection consists of his American Civil War Diary and an annotated transcription of the diary by Robert James Johnston. Burdette Francis Johnston (1913-1992) was an instructor of Speech and Theatre and Vice Provost of Kappa Division of the College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn where he taught Jim and John Belushi. He also taught Kathryn Hays (born Kay Piper) who is best known for her role as Kim Hughes on the CBS soap opera, As the World Turns from 1972 to 2010. B.F. Johnston taught Kathryn speech and drama while she attended Joliet Township High School. His collection of papers include his school records (grade school, high school, and college), teaching papers, his letters to his wife Emily Nesbit Johnston before and after their marriage, newspaper clippings and articles, and photographs. The Emily Nesbit Johnston (1917-2008) papers consist of her school records (high school and college), cards and letters, wedding book, and newspaper articles. The Robert James Johnston (1945-2015) papers consists of his school records (grade school, high school, and college), birth announcements, letters and correspondence, newspaper articles, home movies, and family farm records (Columbus Junction, Iowa). The Huber Family papers consist of school records of Sherry Lynn Huber Johnston, records collected by Delbert Edward Huber (1921-2003) and Marion Gertrude Stassen Huber (b. 1926), and newspaper clippings related to Liebermann Jewelers in Joliet, Illinois. Also included in the collection are World War II ration books owned by James R. Johnston of Hoopeston, Illinois, a Stassen Family Bible owned by Charles J. Stassen (1866-1942), a bible owned by Emily Nesbit Johnston, and a bible owned by Robert James Johnston.

Accession 877 - M395 (446)This collection consists of a photocopy of a typed transcript of the recollections of James "Jim" Alexander Milling (1846-1916) of his service in the American Civil War from 1862-1865. He wrote them sometime prior to his death in 1916. He was a native of Fairfield County, South Carolina and is buried at First Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Greenwood, SC. Milling joined the Confederate Army in 1862 and served as a Corporal in Company G, 3rd Battalion South Carolina Infantry. He participated in the Battles of: Fredericksburg; Chancellorsville; Chickamauga; Chattanooga; Battle of the Wilderness; Spotsylvania; Cold Harbor; Fisher’s Hill; New Market Heights; Bentonville;

Accession 1094 - M503 (553)This collection consists of a typescript copy of an American Civil War memoir titled “Dark Days of the Confederacy.” The work was written by Lancaster native Annie E. Witherspoon (1850-1923) August 20, 1915 and transcribed by Tony Emanuel on January 31, 2003. Annie Witherspoon’s wrote of her experiences during the Union Armies’ siege of the town of Lancaster, SC in February of 1865. The siege lasted six days and Ms. Witherspoon documents what the natives of Lancaster experienced and how they perceived the invading Union Army. She discusses some personal experiences, as well as those of others. In her essay she mentions Union General Wheeler, Butler, and Fitzpatrick and how their men treated the people of Lancaster. She also mentions Confederate general Kilpatrick and how her personal slaves helped them. And Mrs. Witherspoon recalled, “...to this day we remember in loving gratitude what they did (our slaves) for us in our hour of need.”

Subjects include disaster relief, volunteers, courses of instruction, aid and services to soldiers and veterans of World War II and Vietnam, Junior Red Cross, blood donation, Suzanne Johnson (Daughter of David B. Johnson), and the Sunshine Club for the visually impaired. Also included are uniforms and caps. Much of the collection consists of American National Red Cross publications on various subjects, posters, and brochures.

Accession 158The John Gary Anderson Papers consist of biographical sketches of J.G. Anderson and Alice Holler Anderson (wife of J.G. Anderson), newspaper clippings offering accounts of the success and failures of the Rock Hill Buggy Company, the Anderson Motor Company and “the Rock Hill Plan” for reduction of the cotton crop in the south. Also included is a map of Rock Hill dated 1891 and scrapbooks containing advertising materials for Anderson’s products, photographs, and correspondence relating to Anderson’s business, his will and years as a trustee of Winthrop College (1920-1937).

Accession 493The John Wesley Anderson Jr. Papers consist of material collected by the prominent Rock Hill Anderson Family predominantly of Rock Hill, SC. John Wesley Anderson Jr. was a Winthrop Training School Graduate (Class of 1933) and was the grandson of John Gary Anderson who was one the founders of the Anderson Buggy Company which later became the Anderson Motor Company. The Anderson House on Oakland Avenue in Rock Hill was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The collection includes letters received from family and friends, personal diaries, newspaper clippings, and military manuals: graphs, worksheets and textbook from World War II. Anderson attended Coast Artillery School. Also included are a diary, letters, memoranda, program notes, and materials related to military members, the Winthrop Training School, and First Presbyterian Church of Rock Hill, S.C.

Accession 1052 - M475 (526)The collection consists of an interview of Roy Byrd on VHS who worked for the Anderson Motor Company in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The Anderson Motor Company which was the successor of the Rock Hill Buggy Company which was founded in 1886 by Adley Holler and, his son-in-law, John Gary Anderson in Rock Hill, SC. The factory produced high quality automobiles and at one point employed 250 workers. Among these workers was Roy Byrd who worked at the Anderson Motor Company from 1917 to 1920.

She traces women in Appalachia from the Cherokee women who had the right to speak at council meetings to the strong independent Ulster-Scot settlers who brought their education with them, to 19th Century farm women, to textile workers and to 1970's & 1980' s activists. Included is information on or interviews with Civil War farm women Emily Lyles Harris, jury service advocate Sara Liverance, and South Carolina House members Carolyn Frederick and Martha Fitzgerald.

The Aragon Mill was organized in 1906 and built in 1907 by Alexander Long with financial support of J. P. Stevens as cotton mill. The Mill would later merge with Baldwin Mills and became known as Aragon Baldwin Mill in 1924. The mill was located just west of Manchester Mill in Rock Hill, SC off of Dave Lyle Boulevard.

Carmel, South Carolina documenting her trip to the Third Triennial Conference of the Associated Country Women of the World in Washington, D.C. from during June 1936. Included are various memorabilia, including a state name tag, conference schedule booklet, drawn map of a room in the Hotel Harrington (including names and addresses of roommates) and newspaper clippings. Also included are two panoramic prints (Panoramic Box 1, Folder 7) of the women who attended the Third Triennial Conference of the Associated Country Women of the World, taken in Washington, DC in 1936. The first is on one of the White House lawns with President and Mrs. Roosevelt in the distant Background (measures 37” x 10”). The second was taken at the Constitution Hall in Washington DC with Eleanor Roosevelt Seated on Stage. Also in the picture (in the distant background) are President and Mrs. Franklin Roosevelt and several staff members (Measures 32” x 10”).

The collection also includes the papers of John Ball (1760-1817), William James Ball (1787-1808), Ann Simons Ball (1776-1840), John Ball (1782-1834), and William James Ball (1821-1891), as well as the journal (1715-1716) of Captain George Chicken (d. 1727). Also included are releases (1645-1646) to John and Edward Harleston of England, and the epitaph (ca. 1699) of James Bond (d. 1699) of England.

(Rev. James Spratt White (1841-1891)). The sermon was preached by request at “Catholic – Oct. 3rd 1875, at Presbytery (Tirzah) – Oct. 9th, at Pleasant Grove – Oct. 24th, at Unity Church – Oct. 31st.” Rev, William Banks served as pastor of Bethel Presbytery and Pleasant Grove Presbytery beginning in the 1840s. He also served as stated supply pastor of Providence Presbyterian Church and Unity Presbyterian Church in Fort Mill, SC. Banks Presbyterian Church in Marvin, NC was named in his honored. Rev. William Banks is also the father of William Banks the first superintendent of the Rock Hill Schools

Bill Barron attended Winthrop Training School from 1930 to 1942.

Accession 856This collection consists mainly of correspondence belonging to Susan Amelia McQueen “Sue” Barron (1898-1995) and her son, William T. “Bill” Barron. The correspondence to Sue Barron includes some correspondence dealing with genealogy and her involvement in the Daughters of the American Revolution. There is also a large collection of Christmas cards, dating from 1948 to 1961. The information regarding her study at Winthrop University includes receipts, letters from college officials, and two Christmas cards from President Henry R. Sims.
The correspondence belonging to Bill Barron includes letters written to him by family and friends, as well as letters and postcards sent to him by family and friends, as well as letters and postcards sent by Bill Barron to his parents, as well as letters and postcards sent by Bill Barron to his parents while he was in school and in the military.

Accession 1716 M828 (885)This collection consists of a framed watercolor painting titled, “Holiday Time in the South” by Lionel Barrymore. The nameplate states: “Painted And Presented To The Citizens Of Rock Hill As A Memento Of My Sincere Appreciation For Their Good Will Towards Me, 8-11-’53, Lionel Barrymore.” Also included in the collection are several photocopies of newspaper articles related to the receipt of the painting from 1953-1954 and a letter written by Lionel Barrymore on his letterhead to Miss Nan Weller Carson of the Rock Hill Public Library dated May 2, 1954. Lionel Barrymore (1878-1954) was a famous actor, director, author, and painter. A member of the Keystone Club of Rock Hill, Mrs. Eva M. White, wrote to Lionel as part of a project she was working on and Mr. Barrymore responded with a letter and telegram. In response, members of the Keystone Club sent several hundred letters and birthday cards to him for his 75th birthday. In thanks he painted and dedicated the watercolor, “Holiday Time in the South” to the City of Rock Hill.

Accession 526 - M225 (272)Albin O. Bauer was a professor and the director of music at Winthrop from 1907-1913. He was retired and moved back to Germany in 1913 just before the outbreak of World War I. The letters provide a nostalgic glimpse of life in Rock Hill in the early twentieth century and provide information from the German point of view about World War I by a former resident of the United States. The letters detail the struggles Mr. Bauer endured while attempting to reconcile his admiration of the U.S. with his love of Germany and the German Culture that was threatened during World War I and what life was like following the defeat of the Germans in the war. Most of the letters were written to the Fewell family of Rock Hill, SC with whom he lived with while working at Winthrop.

The Florence Richard Baxter Papers consist of correspondence, memoranda, bylaws, financial records, publications, brochures, newspaper clippings, and legislative voting profiles, mainly relating to the South Carolina Business and Professional Women’s Club activities in support of the proposed Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) ratification in the South Carolina General Assembly and the activities of such South Carolina Women’s organizations as the Columbia chapter of the National Organization of Women (NOW), the South Carolina Coalition for the Equal Rights Amendment, and Equal Rights Amendment South Carolina.
