Historical Note

The Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church began in Scotland with the teachings of John Knox in 1560. The Church of Scotland was best with problems for a century. In 1688, King William III reorganized the Church of Scotland into the Established Presbyterian Church of Scotland. Although the situation improved, there were still problems. In 1733 pastor Ebenezer Erskine formed a separate Associate Presbytery. In 1743 another group organized into the Reformed Presbytery. After many of these folks emigrated to America, the Associate Reformed Synod was formed in 1782. In 1790 the Associate Reformed Presbytery of the Carolinas and Georgia was formed. In 1803 the entire church was divided into four Synods and one General Synod (Carolinas, Pennsylvania, New York and Scioto). In 1822, the Synod of the Carolinas was granted separate status and by the end of the 19th century was the sole remaining body of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. The churches are mainly in the Southeast area of the United States and have a total membership of approximately 40,000.
