Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of a 86 page handwritten Memorial Sermon for Reverend William Banks (1814-1875) following his death which was written in September 1875 by J. S. W. (Rev. James Spratt White (1841-1891)). The sermon was preached by request at “Catholic – Oct. 3rd 1875, at Presbytery (Tirzah) – Oct. 9th, at Pleasant Grove – Oct. 24th, at Unity Church – Oct. 31st.” Rev, William Banks served as pastor of Bethel Presbytery and Pleasant Grove Presbytery beginning in the 1840s. He also served as stated supply pastor of Providence Presbyterian Church and Unity Presbyterian Church in Fort Mill, SC. Banks Presbyterian Church in Marvin, NC was named in his honored. Rev. William Banks is also the father of William Banks the first superintendent of the Rock Hill Schools
