The play is about Sir Walter Raleigh’s expedition to the New World that landed in North Carolina in 1588. Mary W. Long was the wife of Winthrop Theater Professor and founder of Winthrop Theater Department William Ivy Long, Sr. and is the mother of famed costume designer William Ivy Long, Jr.

Accession 1573 - M768 (825)This collection includes two Navy buttons that belonged to Dr. Jean Olivia Love who was a 1949 Winthrop graduate with a Masters in Psychology. The buttons were issued Ensign Jean Love while she served in the Navy during World War II and both contain a photograph of her. Dr. Jean Olivia Love (1920-2015) was born in York County, South Carolina and lived in McConnellsville. She went on to receive her doctorate from the University of North Carolina and then started a long career as a Professor of Psychology at Lebanon Valley College until she retired in 1985. She was also chairman of the Psychology Department from 1954-1970).

Accession 1157 - M533 (584)The collection consists of a thesis written by D.A. (Donald Anthony) Low (1927-2015) for Exeter College Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1957 from Oxford University. D. A. Low, was a historian of modern South Asia, Africa, the British Commonwealth, and, especially, decolonization. He was the Emeritus Smuts Professor of History of the British Commonwealth at the University of Cambridge, former Vice-Chancellor of the Australian National University, Canberra, and President of Clare Hall, Cambridge. The thesis pertains to the British contacts and interests in East Africa, specifically Uganda, in the late nineteenth century from 1862-1900.

Accession 212The Lowry-Avery Family Papers consist of photocopies of biographical data and family history data, correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, programs from family reunions, and other papers. Includes a copy of the printed version of a diary by Samuel Cosmo Lowry (1845-1864) of the 17th Infantry SCV Co. F, providing a highly literate account of the life of a young Confederate soldier: “We lay in the woods a short distance from the enemy’s line, watching the flying shells as they passed over us, seeing, whistling, literally plowing the air, the loud shriek of the flying shells, the dull whiz of the great ancanisten, with the disappearing cry of wounded mortals, fairly rent the air.”

Accession 1421The Dr. David Lowry Papers consist of work papers, music, photographs, a list of concerts, and documents pertaining to the construction of the Gabriel Kney Organ in the Barnes Recital Hall At Winthrop University. The collection also includes papers pertaining to the restoration of the D.B. Johnson Memorial Organ, David Lowry’s “A Short History of the Pipe Organs at Winthrop”, and information regarding the Gabriel Kney Organ and Angerstein practice organ. Dr. Lowry was an organist, harpsichordist, and is a retired professor of music at Winthrop University from 1965-2012.

She is an accomplished poet and was inducted into the South Carolina Academy of Authors, the state's literary Hall of Fame on April 25, 2009.The Susan Gayle Bartels Ludvigson Papers consist of an employment vita, correspondence, galley proofs, promotional material for writer’s conferences, contractual agreements, awards and newspaper clippings, mainly relating to the publication of Ms. Ludvigson’s first volume of poetry, entitled, Step Carefully in Night Grass, and to the publication of her other poems in literary magazines, prominent periodicals and journals.

Her freelance writing appeared in newspapers, magazines, and special projects such as brochures for beach condos or children’s homes. This collection contains correspondence between Julie and different publishers, along with drafts from her editing process. The collection also contains minutes and financial information from her time on the board at Killingsworth Home for Women and the National Organization for Women (NOW). Killingworth Home for Women is a Columbia, SC based nonprofit “committed to helping women lead sober and clean lives.” The National Organization for Women (NOW) was organized to improve the status and life of South Carolina Women and to aid in efforts toward the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).

Accession 533The Francis Murray Mack, Sr. Papers are divided into eight sections. The first section consists of his educational papers and the organization of the Catawba Association. The second section includes papers relating to the Ministers’ Annuity Fund. Other sections include his military papers which include his military papers which include numerous maps, papers concerning Camp Campbell and Korea, papers dealing with historical organizations of which he was a member, photographs, newspaper clippings and various pamphlets. There are three appendices which list the names of the pamphlets and the maps and also list the organizations that Francis M. Mack, Sr. was a member.

Accession 1847 M863 (921)This collection consists of a 1920s panoramic print of Manchester Cotton Mill which was located in Rock Hill, SC on the North side of what is now Dave Lyle Blvd at the corner of Curtis Street and Quantz Street. Manchester Mills was built in 1895 and opened in 1896 with John R. Barron and R.T. Fewell being the most prominent in its early development. Manchester went bankrupt in 1920. The J. P. Stevens Company based in New York eventually became sole owner of the plant in 1948. The plant was then known as the J.P. Stevens Textile Mill.

Acccession 805The Peter Manigault Letter Book Collection consists of microfiche copies of bound volume of letters written by Manigault from October 1763 through May 1773 most while served in the South Carolina House of Commons. Peter Manigault (1731-1773) was a Charleston, SC Lawyer, legislator, and planter born to the wealthy merchant Gabriel Manigault (1704-1781) and Anne Ashby Manigault (1705-1782). Peter Manigault studied law at London’s Inner Temple, and was called to the British bar in 1752. Manigault served in the South Carolina House of Commons in 1755, and again from 1766 to 1773. Late in 1773 he left South Carolina for England for health reasons, resigning the speakership of the South Carolina House of Commons and died later that year on November 12, 1773.

Accession 1357 - M678 (733)This collection consists of a map titled Carte de France et Des Frontieres which was printed at Base Printing Plant, 29th Engineers, US Army in 1918. The map is also labeled “No. 11 Longwy” and shows portions of Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and Meurthe-et-Moselle in Europe. This topographical map shows train routes and water routes and identifies cities, towns, and villages. The map was created during World War I by the Topographic Division of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) due to a lack of adequate maps of the area before they arrived. This map most likely accompanied a military officer during the last year of the war.

Mount Dearborn, previously known as Rocky Mount, was the National Armory located on the Catawba River in Rocky Mount, SC from 1802-1829. Mount Dearborn was located just below the Great Falls (sometimes called Catawba Falls) on the Catawba River. After the Catawba River was dammed by Duke Electric the Great Falls no longer existed.

Accession 980The Robert Marett Papers are a valuable resource for researchers, as well as surveyors, in researching the growth and development of the various communities in which he worked. Bob Marett’s work, which includes survey plats (as well as copies of plats from previous surveyors), maps, architectural drawings, field notes, correspondence, copies of deeds, and appointment ledgers are available for researchers and surveyors to peruse. The collection consists of 40, 000 pieces and 124 bound volumes that span from the late 1800s to 1992. The Inventory itself consists of 313 pages and individual plats are searchable by Property Owner as well as by the Date of the Survey.

Most of the material pertains to Dr. Massey’s publishing efforts, her work as a Winthrop faculty member and scholar and her involvement with professional organizations, especially the Southern Historical Association and the Civil War Centennial Commission. While there is material extending from Dr. Massey’s student days at Hendrix College (a 1937 graduate), most of the substantive material extends from 1953-1973.

Mary Ona Denny Mathews (1897-1988) graduated from Winthrop College in 1919 and began working at Winthrop in the Business Office from 1919 until she retired in 1942. She married Brig. Gen. Lucius Don Mathews (1893-1972) on August 9, 1924. The collection includes: photographs and negatives of Winthrop Faculty and Staff and Winthrop buildings, holiday greetings cards to Mary, a post card, 1919 Winthrop Students’ Handbook, a fee form, a publication titled, “The Last Meeting of the Confederate Cabinet”, Winthrop Bulletin, Winthrop Weekly News, letters, a Winthrop view book, and memorabilia including a “WC” Winthrop armband and a bookmark.

Mary Ona Denny Mathews (1897-1988) graduated from Winthrop College in 1919 and began working at Winthrop in the Business Office from 1919 until she retired in 1942. She married Brig. Gen. Lucius Don Mathews (1893-1972) on August 9, 1924. The collection contains three postcards: One dated July 29, 1919 from David Bancroft Johnson; the other two have not been used or dated. There is also one photograph of a young lady at Winthrop-not dated; a two page letter from D. B. Johnson in regards to her marriage and employment at Winthrop, dated 1924; a 1915-1919 scrapbook of articles and photographs of Winthrop; a two page letter from 1964 in reference to their coming fiftieth class reunion; Miss Denny’s Diploma; and an articles from 1942 on her retirement from Winthrop’s business office.

Don Mathews on August 9, 1924 and passed away on May 14, 1988. The Mary Ona Denny Mathews Papers consists of records and memorabilia of her time as a student at Winthrop (star course ticket, programs, photographs, and papers), newspaper clippings concerning the death of D.B. Johnson, and a 1919 paper on General Haig and a June 1, 1942 editorial from The State concerning the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) controversy at Winthrop. Also included are records from Mrs. Mathew’s tenure in Winthrop’s Business Office concerning donations and gifts.

Accession 813 - M370 (421)This collection consists of an application submitted to the National Historic Register of Historic Places for inclusion of the Greek Revival house located at 353 Oakland Avenue, Rock Hill, South Carolina known as the Stokes-Mayfield House. The application contains historical notes on the history of the families who owned the property and of the property itself. Also included are historical and architectural descriptions and photocopies of photographs, articles, plats, and maps of the house as well. The Stokes-Mayfield house was accepted and entered into the National register of Historic Places on May 17, 1984.
