Scope and Content Note

The Wilson–Long Family Correspondence Collection consists of two pieces of correspondence and their typed transcriptions. The materials include an invitation card to a celebratory tea for the South Carolina Federation of Women’s Clubs hosted by Arrah Minerva Wilson Long (1868-1943), and a letter from Alexander Long Sr. (1858-1932) addressed to Minnie Wilson prior to their marriage.

These documents provide insight into the personal and civic lives of the Long family. Alexander Long Sr. served as president of several textile enterprises, including the Aragon-Baldwin-Whitmire Mills and the Industrial Cotton Mill (also known as Blue Buckle), formerly associated with the Manchester mills. Together, Alexander and Minnie Long were active in promoting adult literacy and educational opportunities for mill workers in Rock Hill. In partnership with local schools and Winthrop University, they supported educational, agricultural, and home extension programs in mill village communities.

Collectively, the materials document both personal correspondence and the broader civic engagement of the Wilson–Long family in early twentieth-century Rock Hill.

Provenance
