Scope and Content Note

The Cathcart Family Papers consist of materials documenting the lives, activities, and interests of Ellen Evans Cathcart (1869–1952) and her daughter, Kate Evans Cathcart Lindsay (1898–1975), as well as their family. Ellen Evans Cathcart, born in Columbia, South Carolina, was a prominent civic and community leader who served as an Associate Democratic National Committee member, was instrumental in the founding of the South Carolina Children’s Bureau, and was a charter member of the Equal Suffrage League of South Carolina. The collection documents her involvement with the Children’s Bureau, women’s suffrage, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, women’s clubs, and other civic and advocacy organizations, as well as her correspondence, biographical materials, certificates, photographs, personal effects, and materials relating to her travels in Europe and elsewhere. The collection also includes documents relating to her World War I service with the Woman’s Division of the U.S. Council of National Defense and a World War II ration book.

Kate Evans Cathcart Lindsay was a graduate of Winthrop Normal and Industrial College, Class of 1919, and later served as president of the Greenville, South Carolina, Chapter of the Winthrop Alumni Association. Her papers include schoolwork and materials from Columbia High School, Winthrop correspondence and memorabilia, graduation materials, two diaries documenting her student years at Winthrop from 1915–1919, a scrapbook, photographs, correspondence, certificates, personal writings, artwork, and personal Bibles. The collection also documents her service with the American National Red Cross and the Woman’s Land Army of America during World War I, as well as her family and professional life.

Of particular significance are Kate Cathcart Lindsay’s diaries and scrapbook, which provide firsthand accounts of student life at Winthrop from 1915–1919 and offer insight into the experiences of a female college student during World War I. The collection also contains correspondence and materials relating to the Winthrop Alumni Association, including correspondence with James P. Kinard and Shelton Phelps. Ellen Cathcart’s papers provide additional documentation of women’s civic engagement, suffrage activities, social and professional organizations, child welfare, and public service in South Carolina during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The collection also includes photographs of Ellen and Kate Cathcart Lindsay, their family members, and other individuals; family correspondence and documents; personal items; publications; maps; certificates; school materials; and travel memorabilia. Ellen Cathcart’s extensive travel materials document trips to Europe and include guidebooks, maps, photographs, postcards, correspondence, hotel and transportation materials, and other ephemera from England, Scotland, Wales, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, and other destinations.

Provenance

The papers of Kate Evans Cathcart Lindsay, Winthrop alumnus – class of 1919, were received as a gift by the Winthrop Archives from Mrs. Beth Evans Jones on July 3, 1978. Additional papers and items belonging to Ellen Evans Cathcart and Kate Evans Cathcart Lindsay were donated by the son and daughter of Kate Lindsay, Dr. Gordon L. Jones and Bonnie Jones, who organized and labeled much of the collection.
