Roberts who was a 1938 graduate of Winthrop and a 25 year veteran of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) and Women's Army Corps (WAC).These papers, which consist of correspondence, scrapbooks, photocopies, orders, and military papers, document not only her career but also her and her family’s participation in World War II including brothers, Harold O. Roberts, James William Roberts, Herbert N. Roberts, sister, Lily Roberts Allen, and brother-in-law, Robert D. Allen. There is also information on World War I, Italy, Winthrop College and York, South Carolina.

Accession 1643This collection contains postcards, letters (both personal and business), newsletters, three scrap books, two Winthrop College yearbooks years 1943 & 1945, and photographs. Postcards are mostly German, but contains some French and American, scenes from World War I. Many letters are personal and business correspondence from 1945 some of which pertains to World War II. Two of the scrapbooks belonged to Dr. Walter Buchanan Roberts (1893-1993) who was a professor and director of Music at Winthrop College for 32 years and one of the scrapbooks belonged to his daughter Mary Gene Roberts (1926-2016) who attended the Winthrop Training School (Class of 1942) and graduated from Winthrop College in 1945. Mary Gene Roberts Hardin married James Carlisle Hardin, Jr. (1915-2002). James C. Hardin Jr. and his brother John Anderson Hardin (1920-2010) worked at The Rock Hill Body Shop, with their father James C. Hardin, Sr. (1887-1943), and both entered the U.S. Navy during World War II. Another Winthrop and family connection was Kate Glenn Hardin (1885-1957) who was Dean of Women at Winthrop College from 1932-1951 and was a cousin of James, Jr. and John.

Accession 485This collection consists of black and white photographs autographed by the entertainers who performed at Winthrop College as part of the institution’s Artist Series program, a photograph of the Winthrop College Poetry Society including Dr. David B. Johnson, founder and first president of Winthrop, and photographs of Walter B. Roberts and other Winthrop College Professors as well as visiting instructors from Juilliard School of Music. Artists include Jasha Heifetz, Jan Peerce, Will Rogers, Arthur Rubenstein, Risë Stevens, Vienna Choir Boys and many others.

Accession 1284This collection follows the career and life of Dr. Walter B. Roberts (1893-1993). Roberts, former head of the Winthrop Music Department (1925-1958), who founded the South Carolina High School Music Festival and contributed greatly to the formation of music programs around the state. The contents of this collection regarding Dr. Walter Roberts cover various aspects of his life such as his education, service in the military, and career at Winthrop. The contents include correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, a house blueprint, academic transcripts, program bulletins, and documents concerning his funeral.

Accession 1051 - M474 (525)The Robinson Family Papers consist of photocopies of letters written during the American Civil War by Samuel L. Robinson and James Robinson of the 4th South Carolina Volunteers, Co. A to their parents. Also included is information concerning George Frank Robinson who was in 7th South Carolina Volunteers Co. A and Archibald Franklin McCord who was in 1st SCV Co. A later Hampton’s Calvary. There is also a typescript copy of a Civil War remembrance February 1884) by Eliza Lucilla Haskell Lee (1836-1905) who describes what civilian living in Charleston, SC (and in South Carolina) was like during the war. There are also reminiscences of the Civil War by James Smith Middleton (1856-1943) who was born in Charleston, SC and moved to Columbia, SC during the Civil War as a child. He discusses civilian life in Columbia, SC as General Sherman and the Union Army advanced, sacked, and then occupied the city. He details at length the rioting and burning of Columbia, SC by Union soldiers and then later life under Reconstruction. The collection also consists of copies of photographs of Civil War soldiers and of a sword.

Accession 1093 - M502 (552)This collection consists of a letter to Mrs. Mary Lee Robertson Robinson (1897-1994) from Mrs. Ruth P. Bartlett (circa 1921-1927), two pages of a scrapbook. One devoted to Winthrop student Lucille Godbold and the Olympic games. Consists of two articles and 4 photographs pertaining to Lucille and her Olympic exploits. Articles were taken from The News And Courier newspaper (August 1922). The second page consists of Mrs. Robertson’s notes on proper posture and a poem devoted to posture titled Ode to Posture, as well as a certificate acknowledging Mrs. Robertson’s membership in the “Life Loving Corps Boston School Of Physical Education.” There are two loose newspaper articles; one devoted to Hugh Walpole’s visit to Winthrop College and autobiographical passages from Mr. Walpole, the other article is devoted to Mrs. Robertson’s 9 and 3/4 mile hike with some classmates titled “Cox College Girls Hike To Atlanta In Fast Time Of One Hour And 40 Minutes” taken from The Atlanta Journal May 16, 1916. Collection also includes two Friday, October 20, 1922 issues of the Winthrop College News magazines devoted to Lucille Godbold’s return to Winthrop and her Olympic exploits and one issue of The Johnsonian dated December 1, 1923, and two copies of an October 26, 1953 article from the Evening Herald pertaining to Laura Sidney Robinson’s (Mary Lee’s daughter) marriage to Dr. Harry Courtney Bagby.

The collection consists of mainly of photographs of unknown employees and patrons of People’s National Bank and C & S National Bank, photos of events either attended by members or sponsored by the People’s National Bank and C & S National Bank, photos of employees or customers, a photo of C & S employees serving free drinks to Winthrop students during registration, and photos of the city of Rock Hill, it’s railway system, and Winthrop. The collection also includes a history of the of the Peoples national Bank of Rock Hill and The Peoples Trust Company, correspondence, brochures, posters, certificates, and newspaper articles and clippings.

Accession 1100 - M507 (557)This collection consists of research materials pertaining to professional and semi-professional baseball in Rock Hill from the 1890s Anderson Buggy Team to the 1968 Rock Hill Spinners. This collection’s emphasis is on the 1950 Tri-State League Champion Rock Hill Chiefs, but also, contains research material on famous baseball icons, such as Dusty Rhodes, Steve Carlton, and Sparky Anderson, all of whom played or managed Rock Hill teams. There is material pertaining to David Mobley, the first officially recognized African-American to play on an all-white minor league team in the Carolinas. This material was compiled by Andrew Johnston for a paper and presentation in the Spring of 2003 Public History course taught by Dr. Edward Lee at Winthrop University.

Accession 1390The Rock Hill Body Company Collection consists entirely of digital scans of material pertaining to the Rock Hill Body Company which was located in Rock Hill, SC and was one of the earliest makers of truck and school bodies in South Carolina. The collection includes newspaper articles, correspondence, brochures, advertisement posters and flyers, photographs, and sales guides mostly related to the Rock Hill Body Company, however there are several items related to the Anderson Motor Company including engine diagrams, newspaper articles, and photographs. There are also several records related to the Hardin family which owned and operated the Rock Hill Body Company including correspondence, programs, commencement invitations, newspaper articles, and photographs. The vast majority of the photographs are of truck and car bodies built by the Rock Hill Body Company, but also includes a couple aerial photographs Downtown Rock Hill.

The Henkle Live Stock Company was based in Statesville, North Carolina. The Rock Hill Buggy Company, based in Rock Hill, SC, built horse drawn carriages and buggies in the late 1800s until the company began building motor vehicles in the early part of the 20th century and became known as the Anderson Motor Company. The Rock Hill Buggy Company and the Anderson Motor Company were owned and operated by John Gary Anderson.

The booklet details the history of the factory which was built in 1881 and closed in 1967. The Rock Hill Cotton factory was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. The building has been re-purposed as retail and office space.

Accession 242 - M102 (131)This collection consists of letters from William Harrison “Harry” Wylie (1857-1920) while he was employed by the Catawba Power Company (later became Duke Energy). Beginning in 1901, Harry was in charge of building the dam at India Hook Shoals on the Catawba River that created Lake Wylie. Harry was the brother of Dr. Walker Gill Wylie (1848-1923) for which Lake Wylie is named. Both of the letters written on Catawba Power Company letterhead concern Harry’s involvement with the Rock Hill Fire Department. One letter dated November 19, 1903 is to Mr. William Joseph Roddey (1861-1945) and the other dated February 18, 1905 is addressed to the Rock Hill Fire Department. Also included in this collection is a program book for the 33rd Annual Convention of South Carolina State Firemen’s Association held in Rock Hill in 1928. The program book lists officers of the Association, committee appointments, fire chiefs in SC, Rock Hill city officials with brief biographical sketches and sketches of the history of SC State Firemen’s Association, the city of Rock Hill and of Winthrop College.

It lists every student’s name, their grades and grade levels, whether they were promoted to the next grade, and whether they continued as students. The student entries for the 1895/1896 academic year are listed at the top of each page in black ink, while the student entries for the 1896/1897 academic year are listed in the middle of the same page in red ink. The Rock Hill Graded School opened in 1888 and was the first public, tax-supported school in Rock Hill, SC and housed elementary and high school students for s 1st grade through 9th grade.

The collection consists of a 1906 ledger, financial records, a photograph, a seed license, World War II ration booklets, and newspaper clippings.

Each aerial photograph measures 24 x 24” and depicts different segments of Rock Hill from the Rock Hill Airport to Albright Road and from York Technical College to Ogden Road from around 1965.

Accession 1685 M816 (873)The Downtown Rock Hill Survey Plats consists of two plats laying out Main Street and downtown Rock Hill, SC on November 6 and 7th 1851 and November 26 and 27th 1856. Both surveys were conducted by John “Squire” Roddey, Esq. (1805-1860), Deputy Surveyor. These plats are the earliest known surveys conducted of Rock Hill, SC. These surveys were conducted to determine the layout of the new town as the Columbia and Charlotte Railroad built rail line and depot nearby beginning in 1848. Rock Hill would be founded in 1852 and incorporated in 1892. These plats offer an invaluable source for researchers interested in the founding of the city of Rock Hill.

The list of soldiers includes their names, where they served, occasionally what branch they served in, and occasionally whether they died in action. This book would be invaluable for anyone researching Rock Hill, SC’s War efforts during World War I.

Accession 1482The Rock Hill Power Company Records contains thirty nine individual records owned by the Rock Hill Power Company and Rock Hill Water and Electric Company between the years 1856 to 1941. The records consist of abstracts of data, titles and deeds, agreements between the Rock Hill Power Company and other entities, minutes and proceedings letters, lawyer opinion regarding rights to supply water to Rock Hill, and a surveyor sketch. This collection of particular interest to researchers interested in the Rock Hill, SC’s early efforts to bring electric lights to the city in the early 1890s and Rock Hill’s legal authority to acquire ownership of local water and light plants. Also included is a legal statement on the installation of a street railway and information regarding the Rock Hill Little Theater.

Accession 196The Bleachery Beacon Collection consists of the irregularly published employee newsletter of the Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Company located in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Company, known locally as "The Bleachery" was one the nations largest textile finishing plants at it's height. The Rock Hill plant bleached, dyed, printed and finished cloth and employed nearly 5,000 workers at its height in 1965. The plant site was placed on the National Register of Historic places in 2013.

Accession 368This collection is a valuable source on the history of the textile industry in Rock Hill and particular the Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Company’s role in its development. Of particular interest is a scrapbook containing nearly a 100 photographs of the construction of the plant including aerial views. The scrapbook also contains many newspaper clippings from the period 1928-1935 that details the construction of the plant and its early operation. Also included in the collection are copies of the newsletters, Newsy Notes and Reporter, a 1943 publication picturing employees serving in the armed forces, and sixteen photographs taken at the foremen’s outing at Joslin Park in May of 1958. Subjects of interest include the founding of the Lowenstein plant in Rock Hill, the direct effects of the New Deal on the workers of Rock Hill, and the strikes of the 1930’s.

Accession 1587This collection consists of two digital video files created by the Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Company to show to clients and explain the printing and finishing process and capabilities of the plant to their prospective clients. These professionally produced videos are an important part of Rock Hill’s textile history and offer a glimpse into the Rock Hill company’s day to day work filmed in the early 1990s. The Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Company Plant was built in 1929 and was one of the most important industries in Rock Hill, SC throughout most of its history. The Bleachery as it was affectionately called was a dominate figure in the Southern Textile industry and at its height of operation employed over 4000 people from Rock Hill and the surrounding area. The plant like many of today’s textile companies has been shut down, formally closing its doors in 1999. Its history is permanently intertwined in the history of Rock Hill and these videos donated by Emile Russett the last General Plant Manager of the Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Company are an invaluable source for researchers searching for information about Rock Hill’s history or that of Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Company.

The program contains information regarding the parts, acts, “synopsis of scenery,” as well as listing the actors and roles.

Accession 1407 - M694 (750)This collection consists of a poster commemorating the grand opening of the remodeled Rock Hill Gateway which included the unveiling of the four 22 foot-tall sculptures (Civitas) that stand at the intersection of Dave Lyle Boulevard and Gateway Boulevard in rock Hill, SC. There is also a fifth Civitas statue inside City Hall. The Rock Hill Economic Development Corporation commissioned Audrey Flack in 1988 to produce the statues with each Civitas holding a different circular emblem to signify: Gears of Industry; Flame of Knowledge; Stars of Inspiration; and Lightning Bolt of Energy. The unveiling of the Civitas statues and the gateway was coordinated with the Annual Come-See-Me event in April of 1991.

The February 11, 2006 historical marker covers Country and Gospel music recordings in the Andrew Jackson Hotel, the important artists who recorded at the hotel, and the influence of illustrator Vernon Grant on Rock Hill. The January 27, 2007, September 6, 2007, and November 30, 2007 historical markers discuss the “sit-ins” that occurred at popular lunch counters in Rock Hill such as McCrory’s, the “Friendship Nine”, the development of the Rock Hill Cotton Factory along with its creators, and also the development of the Citizen’s Building, US Post Office, the Courthouse, and downtown Rock Hill. The May 15, 2008 historical marker reviews Alexander Templeton Black aka “the Founder of Rock Hill”, the Black Plantation, and Governor Wade Hampton’s campaign.

The history was written by Hampton M. Jarrell (1904-1980) for the Rock Hill Centennial in 1952 and includes the following chapters titled: “The Beginnings;” “The Revolution;” “Churches;” “Schools;” “The Negro;” “Coming of the Railroad;” “War, Reconstruction, and Red Shirts;” “Cotton To Town;” “The Mills;” “The Coming of Winthrop;” “Looking Backward;” The Suggested Scenes mirror the chapters in the History. The alternate title for the Rock Hill History Centennial Pageant was “Building the Good Town, Six Generations of People.” Hampton M. Jarrell was a professor of English at Winthrop from 1932 through 1969.
