Manuscript Collection

The Winthrop University Manuscript Collection (over 1800 collections) contains unique private papers donated to the Archives by individuals and records from organizations and businesses. These collections not only document local, regional, and state history, but also transcend South Carolina’s borders to include collections that are of broader historical interest. Genealogy is a prominent theme within the collection with these collections containing valuable family history information, including genealogy charts, family histories, scrapbooks, letters, diaries, wills, grants, indentures and biographical data. Much of the material is unpublished and varies in quantity and content from collection to collection.

    The Kathryn Summers Powell Papers document the professional career and administrative work of Dr. Kathryn Summers Powell (1920–2000), Professor of Home Economics at Winthrop College from 1960 to 1976. The collection primarily reflects Dr. Powell’s leadership in program development, departmental administration, and applied family and community education initiatives during her tenure at Winthrop.

    Materials in the collection consist of faculty manuals, interoffice memoranda, accounting and reimbursement records, calendars, and internal policy documents that illustrate the operational and administrative functions of the Home Economics Department. Of particular significance are records related to curriculum planning and program development, including notes and drafts outlining proposed academic and community-based initiatives.

    The collection contains extensive documentation of the Experimental Family Education Project and its successor, the Family Education/Day Care Program, both of which were developed under Dr. Powell’s direction in the early 1970s. These materials include manuals, policy binders, job descriptions, contract terms, payroll and benefits information, emergency fund documentation, and communications, providing insight into the structure and administration of early childhood education and family services programs within a university setting.

    Additional materials address career development within the Home Economics Department, including career ladder planning, the Model Cities program coordinator position, and logistical matters such as parking policies for program participants. Together, the records highlight Dr. Powell’s role in integrating academic instruction with community outreach and applied education.

    The collection dates primarily from 1968 to 1972 and offers valuable documentation of Home Economics education, program innovation, and institutional administration at Winthrop College during the late twentieth century, as well as Dr. Powell’s contributions to family education and professional practice in higher education.

    The Kathryn Summers Powell Papers consist of Dr. Powell’s professional and organizational files and includes correspondence, drafts and revisions of her speeches and dissertation, biographical data, and teaching notes with reference material. The collection pertains to Dr. Powell’s work as a Winthrop faculty member, scholar and specialist in family and child development and her involvement with such organizations as the Christian Children’s Fund and the Southeastern Council on Family Relations. The material extends from Dr. Powell’s days as a student and young wife in Florida (1940-1959), with most of the substantive material extending from 1960 to 1976.

Some motor vehicle registrations are present, as well as a title.

    The Presbyterian Church of Bethel is located in York County and was organized by Scotch-Irish immigrants from Pennsylvania in 1764. The Presbyterian Church of Bethel History was originally compiled in 1887 by the church’s fifth pastor, the Rev. R.A. Webb, and issued by the Ladies Aid Society, the history was revised in 1938.

The Pamphlet is titled, The Election of 1880 in South Carolina: Address of the State Executive Committee of the Union Republican party of South Carolina, Detailing The Frauds, Violence and Intimidation, By Which South Carolina Was Carried For Hancock and was printed by J. W. Hammond, Charleston, SC in 1880.

    The Pringle Family Letters consist of typescript copies of letters written by Mary Pringle Mitchell (1831-1901) of New Haven, Connecticut and one written by her brother, Edward Jenkins Pringle (1820-1899) of California, to her family in South Carolina during the course of the American Civil War and their views on it. The letters offer insight into the life of a "Southern lady" living deep within "enemy territory" Civil War. These letters were edited by Stuart Lee Butler in 1977 and include biographical notes on the Pringles and those mentioned in the letters as well as explanatory notes.

    The Project Tap Collection consists of two copies of I am Not Born Yet But I Have A Looking Glass: Student Poetry Project Tap edited by Michael Waters and published by the South Carolina Arts: Commission: Columbia, SC in 1975. The publication consist of student poetry from Chester District Schools (Dora Jones-Gayle Elementary School, Southside Elementary School, and York Road Elementary School), Fort Mill District Schools (Fort Mill Senior High and Fort Mill Junior High), and Lancaster County Schools (Buford High, Erwin Elementary, Flat Creek Elementary, Indian Land Elementary, and Kershaw Middle School). Project TAP (Total Arts Program) was created to place artists in the participating public schools.

    The South Carolina Psychological Association (SCPA) was incorporated on April 1, 1955 for the purpose of advancing “psychology as a science, as a profession, and as a means of promoting human welfare.” The South Carolina Psychological Association Records consists of a photocopy of the certificate of incorporation (1955), constitution and bylaws, event programs, invitations, correspondence, newsletters, histories, photographs, and other records related to the activities of SCPA. The collection arrived in three 2-inch binders. Two of these binders contained issues of Feedback the SCPA quarterly newsletter. The third binder contained information about the fiftieth anniversary of incorporation of the SCPA. Some of the information contained in this binder consists of firsts for the SCPA (such as first female president, first president, etc.), the association’s constitution and bylaws, and conference itineraries, as well as a miscellany file which the association included in the binder.

George Washington Cable was an American novelist notable for the realism of his portrayals of Creole life in his native Louisiana as well as his sympathy for civil rights and opposition towards the harsh racism of the era and his friendship with Mark Twain.

This collection consists of records including attendance records from her time at Lugoff Elementary School in Kershaw County, S.C., Sutton Springs School, Cotton Belt School, and York Elementary School in York County, SC.

    The Mai Davidson Ramsey Letter consists of a photocopied letter written in 1940 as a birthday greeting from Mai Davidson Ramsey (1883-1960) to her sister, Ora, describing the day of Ora’s birth on November 20, 1895, and her mother’s near death in childbirth. The letter also contains a good description of family life on a west Tennessee farm at the time.

    James Rape (1922-2012) was a resident of Chester, SC and attended Chester County schools. He served in the U.S. Marines as a sharp shooter during WWII. Mr. Rape was also the owner of the James Studio in Chester, Sc for over fifty years. The James Rape Photograph Collections consists of reprints of photographs of churches and businesses in Chester, SC.

    The Ratchford Family Collection consists of materials collected related to the Ratchford Family of Union County, NC and Union County, SC. The Jones surname also appears throughout the papers. The collection consists of a Call to preach document to Rev. William Wallace Ratchford (1831-1921) to Tirzah Presbyterian Church in Union County, NC, legal documents including deeds to properties and a “Lien on Crops,” a Dixie Cotton Company financial ledger, photographs of family and friends, correspondence, school papers related to William Erwin Ratchford (1865-1944) who attended the Bingham School in Orange County, NC, and three college annuals belonging to family members.

Sealy, scholarship plaque, ceramic plates, and a Winthrop Training School jacket. Dorothy Rauch was the former Winthrop Director of Alumnae Affairs from 1966-1980.

    The Virginia Ravenel Papers consist of articles by Virginia Ravenel (1905-1982) concerning St. John’s Episcopal Church of Florence, South Carolina; John Rutledge and Rawlins Lowndes; “The Two Presidents of South Carolina” (South Carolina Magazine Aug.1959); “Little Mistress Children: A Veritable Happening of Colonial Carolina” (South Carolina Magazine Dec. 1960); “Maxcy Gregg [1814-1862]” (Florence Morning News November 29, 1981); Mars Bluff; Civil War Figure, Florena Budwin (d.1865); Leila Pettigrew Farmer (1867-1970) and Florence, SC; Turn of the Century (20th) Florence; and other historical subjects. Also included are newspaper clippings, obituaries, a typed copy of the will of French Huguenot and an early South Carolina land owner, Benjamin Marion (1670-1734) dated January 13, 1734, and two photographs, one of Ravenel and American poet, Archibald Rutledge (1883-1973), and one of the Henry Timrod School House.

Included are anecdotes and historical accounts of Joel Woodward Rawlinson I and his three brothers with charts of their descendants. Photographs of the Rawlinson and Moore Coats of Arms and Rawlinson ancestors are also included.

    This collection consists of the printed address titled An Address Delivered Before The South Carolina Society, on the Occasion of Opening Their Male Academy, On the 2nd of July, 1827 delivered by William George Read printed in 1827 in Charleston, SC by A. E. Miller at the request of the South Carolina Society. William George Read was the Principal of the South Carolina Society’s Male Academy and delivered the address on July 2, 1827. The Male Academy was a secondary school located in Charleston, SC. The address concerns the state of education in South Carolina and the South at the time and the plans for the curriculum and organization of the new Male Academy.

    This collection consists of photographs taken by Frances McCown Reardon (1920-2001) while attending Winthrop from 1939-1941. Frances is a 1941 graduate of Winthrop College. Her photograph collection consists of several images of classmates and fellow Class of 1941 graduates including: Dulice Harley Martin; Marguerite Beatty Hicks; Ida Carter Cromer; Clara Webb Maxwell; Elizabeth Murphy Moseley; Frances lived in “Old North” (Margaret Nance Dormitory) for her junior and senior years after she transferred from Anderson Junior College. The photographs show life on campus from 1939-1941 and includes dormitory life, student life, and campus buildings.

    Mamie Meacham Reaves (1873-1964) was from Greer, SC and attended Winthrop Normal College when Winthrop was still in Columbia, SC. She began teaching in 1898 and married Edward S. Reaves in 1900. She later lived in Fort Mill, SC. The Mamie Meacham Reeves collection consists of two volumes with detailed notes in mathematics, music, and poetry while a student at Winthrop Normal College in the early 1890s. Also included are photocopies of a biography of Mrs. Reaves which includes newspaper articles, anecdotes, and photographs depicted her life and her family.

    This collection consists of records and materials related to the Red River Community Church. Much of the collection includes financial records, minutes, and other records pertaining to the church’s move from Catawba Indian Nation to Red River Mill. Of particular interest is a ledger contain meeting minutes and a record of disbursements and receipts. Included in the collection is letters with letterhead from the Rock Hill Hardware Company, Carhartt Overall Company, The Peoples Trust Company, D.B. Stearns, House Moving Contractor, Jones Iron Works, Inc., York County Citadel Club, and the Rock Hill Lumber Company.

    The Annie Coryton Rees Papers consist of eight notebooks created and maintained by Annie Coryton Rees (1884–1970), a graduate of Winthrop College, Class of 1906. While enrolled at Winthrop, Rees pursued coursework in Normal Literature, a program focused on the professional preparation of teachers, following earlier studies in Latin.

    The notebooks, primarily Webster composition books, document Rees’s academic work and classroom instruction during her time at Winthrop, with most materials dating from her junior year (1903–1904). Subjects represented include civics, history, reading, pedagogy, and sewing. The volumes contain Rees’s handwritten lecture notes, outlines, and instructional content, offering insight into early twentieth-century teacher education and curriculum at Winthrop College.

    Several notebooks also feature hand-drawn illustrations, historical diagrams, and examples of stitched fabric, reflecting the integration of practical and academic training within the Normal program. Together, the materials provide valuable documentation of student life, pedagogical methods, and women’s education at Winthrop College in the early 1900s.

    Morgan Reeves (1841-1928) was a Confederate Soldier during the American Civil War in Company I of the 13th South Carolina Regiment. He was also an exchanged prisoner at Camp Lee, near Richmond, VA on March 20, 1865. The Morgan Reeves Papers consist of photocopies of company, hospital, receipt rolls, and a morning report of Company I of the 13th South Carolina Regiment of the Confederate Army. The collection is all photocopies.

    The Thomas Sumter Reid Papers consists of genealogical research on various Rock Hill, SC and Chester, SC families by Thomas Sumter Reid (1890-1956). The research and records consist of genealogical and lineage charts, correspondence, notes, typescript copies of York County deeds and wills, census data, immigration data, and other records. Some of the more prominent family names listed alphabetically are Adams; Baskin; Bradley; Craighead; Crawford; Cureton; Drennan; Dunlap; Fayssoux; Gill; Lusk; Massey; Mills; Neely; Reid; Simpson; Workman; Zubly; Of particular interest in the collection is the typescript Civil War diary of Julius Mills (1839-1889), Major 17th Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers. The diary is more descriptive than many Civil War diaries and has many anecdotes and stories including “The Legend of Ravenswood” which concerns Ravenswood Plantation on John’s Island in Charleston County, SC.

Dr. Stephen Meats is a graduate of the university of South Carolina (1966, 1968, 1972) and was a Professor of English at Pittsburg State University from 1970 through 2014.

The collection contains personal correspondence, war correspondence, maps, sketches of building plans, a book of the 1977 genealogy and newspaper clippings chronicling life in SC before, during, and after World War II, Florida in the 1930s, different stations of World War II, and Alaska in the 1960s onward.

Most of the collection focuses on the different family members including Winthrop graduate (Class of 1915) Frances Riley Richardson (1895-1992) and Dr. Martha Richardson who did much in the area of health care in Alaska.

    The Louene Carolyn DuBose Collection consists of student publications, correspondence, and photographs documenting the collegiate experience and later alumni life of Louene Carolyn DuBose Ridgeway (1919–2015), a native of Great Falls, South Carolina, and a member of Winthrop College’s Class of 1940. DuBose earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Music and was an active participant in the literary and musical culture of the campus.

    The collection includes DuBose’s personal copies of The Tatler from 1939 and 1940, both of which contain handwritten notes, messages, and signatures from classmates and faculty, reflecting social networks and student life at Winthrop during the late 1930s. The 1940 volume features original creative work by DuBose, including her song titled “We’ll Never Know” and an eight-line poem written in the form of a triolet, illustrating her engagement with music composition and poetry.

    Also included are two reunion photographs commemorating the 40th and 50th anniversaries of the Class of 1940, as well as two letters: a 1940 letter addressed to DuBose from a former classmate named Betty, and a 2000 letter written by DuBose herself. Together, these materials provide insight into student creativity, personal relationships, and enduring alumni connections associated with Winthrop College.

    Richard Wilson Riley was an American politician of the Democratic Party and former United States Secretary of Education under President Bill Clinton (1993-2001). He served in the South Carolina House of Representatives (1963-1966), South Carolina Senate (1967-977), and as Governor of South Carolina (1978-1987). The Governor Richard Riley Inaugural Program was the official program from the 1983 inauguration ceremony of Governor Richard “Dick” Wilson Riley to his second term as governor of the state of South Carolina.

Richard Wilson “Dick” Riley (1933-) is an South Carolina politician who was South Carolina State Senator from 1967-1977, was the 11th Governor of South Carolina from 1979-1987, and served as 6th United States Secretary of Education from 1993-2001. Winthrop University named its College of Education the Richard W. Riley College of Education in 2000.

    The Major Eleanor M. Roberts Papers consist of records related to Major Eleanor M. Roberts (1916-2000) who was a 1938 graduate of Winthrop and a 25 year veteran of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) and Women's Army Corps (WAC). This collection includes photographs, photocopies, postcards, report cards, illustrations, handwritten notes, military documents and certificates, service medals and ribbons, military dog tags, two photo albums, transcriptions of WWII correspondence, and Roberts family histories. An original draft and copy of Robert’s memoir Wings on My Heels, as well as material relating to Roberts’ time at Winthrop College like her Five Year Diary (1935-1939), 1937-38 Winthrop Handbook, and 1938 Winthrop class ring can be found in this collection.

These papers, which consist of correspondence, genealogy, writings, diaries, and military papers. These documents not only tell about her career but also about her and her family’s participation in World War II including brothers, Harold Obediah Roberts (1914-1956), James William Roberts (1906-1989), Herbert Neely Roberts (1912-2001), Oliver Carlyle Roberts (1919-1996), and sister, Ella Lily Roberts Allen (1898-1985). Also, these papers contain stories and information about her mother and father, her other siblings Mamie Estelle Roberts (1895-1986) and Hazel Roberts (1910-1992), as well as friends and extended family. Most of the information here comes from her retirement while she is living in Washington D.C.

    This collection contains postcards, letters (both personal and business), newsletters, three scrap books, two Winthrop College yearbooks years 1943 & 1945, and photographs. Postcards are mostly German, but contains some French and American, scenes from World War I. Many letters are personal and business correspondence from 1945 some of which pertains to World War II. Two of the scrapbooks belonged to Dr. Walter Buchanan Roberts (1893-1993) who was a professor and director of Music at Winthrop College for 32 years and one of the scrapbooks belonged to his daughter Mary Gene Roberts (1926-2016) who attended the Winthrop Training School (Class of 1942) and graduated from Winthrop College in 1945. Mary Gene Roberts Hardin married James Carlisle Hardin, Jr. (1915-2002). James C. Hardin Jr. and his brother John Anderson Hardin (1920-2010) worked at The Rock Hill Body Shop, with their father James C. Hardin, Sr. (1887-1943), and both entered the U.S. Navy during World War II. Another Winthrop and family connection was Kate Glenn Hardin (1885-1957) who was Dean of Women at Winthrop College from 1932-1951 and was a cousin of James, Jr. and John.

    This collection consists of black and white photographs autographed by the entertainers who performed at Winthrop College as part of the institution’s Artist Series program, a photograph of the Winthrop College Poetry Society including Dr. David B. Johnson, founder and first president of Winthrop, and photographs of Walter B. Roberts and other Winthrop College Professors as well as visiting instructors from Juilliard School of Music. Artists include Jasha Heifetz, Jan Peerce, Will Rogers, Arthur Rubenstein, Risë Stevens, Vienna Choir Boys and many others.

    This collection follows the career and life of Dr. Walter B. Roberts (1893-1993). Roberts, former head of the Winthrop Music Department (1925-1958), who founded the South Carolina High School Music Festival and contributed greatly to the formation of music programs around the state. The contents of this collection regarding Dr. Walter Roberts cover various aspects of his life such as his education, service in the military, and career at Winthrop. The contents include correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, a house blueprint, academic transcripts, program bulletins, and documents concerning his funeral.

    The Robinson Family Papers consist of photocopies of letters written during the American Civil War by Samuel L. Robinson and James Robinson of the 4th South Carolina Volunteers, Co. A to their parents. Also included is information concerning George Frank Robinson who was in 7th South Carolina Volunteers Co. A and Archibald Franklin McCord who was in 1st SCV Co. A later Hampton’s Calvary. There is also a typescript copy of a Civil War remembrance February 1884) by Eliza Lucilla Haskell Lee (1836-1905) who describes what civilian living in Charleston, SC (and in South Carolina) was like during the war. There are also reminiscences of the Civil War by James Smith Middleton (1856-1943) who was born in Charleston, SC and moved to Columbia, SC during the Civil War as a child. He discusses civilian life in Columbia, SC as General Sherman and the Union Army advanced, sacked, and then occupied the city. He details at length the rioting and burning of Columbia, SC by Union soldiers and then later life under Reconstruction. The collection also consists of copies of photographs of Civil War soldiers and of a sword.

    This collection consists of a letter to Mrs. Mary Lee Robertson Robinson (1897-1994) from Mrs. Ruth P. Bartlett (circa 1921-1927), two pages of a scrapbook. One devoted to Winthrop student Lucille Godbold and the Olympic games. Consists of two articles and 4 photographs pertaining to Lucille and her Olympic exploits. Articles were taken from The News And Courier newspaper (August 1922). The second page consists of Mrs. Robertson’s notes on proper posture and a poem devoted to posture titled Ode to Posture, as well as a certificate acknowledging Mrs. Robertson’s membership in the “Life Loving Corps Boston School Of Physical Education.” There are two loose newspaper articles; one devoted to Hugh Walpole’s visit to Winthrop College and autobiographical passages from Mr. Walpole, the other article is devoted to Mrs. Robertson’s 9 and 3/4 mile hike with some classmates titled “Cox College Girls Hike To Atlanta In Fast Time Of One Hour And 40 Minutes” taken from The Atlanta Journal May 16, 1916. Collection also includes two Friday, October 20, 1922 issues of the Winthrop College News magazines devoted to Lucille Godbold’s return to Winthrop and her Olympic exploits and one issue of The Johnsonian dated December 1, 1923, and two copies of an October 26, 1953 article from the Evening Herald pertaining to Laura Sidney Robinson’s (Mary Lee’s daughter) marriage to Dr. Harry Courtney Bagby.

    This collection consists mostly of materials associated with the Rock Hill National Banks including the People’s National Bank (founded in 1906) and the C & S National Bank; the rest of the collection consists of entries that are linked, either directly or indirectly, with the Banking systems of Rock Hill. The collection consists of mainly of photographs of unknown employees and patrons of People’s National Bank and C & S National Bank, photos of events either attended by members or sponsored by the People’s National Bank and C & S National Bank, photos of employees or customers, a photo of C & S employees serving free drinks to Winthrop students during registration, and photos of the city of Rock Hill, it’s railway system, and Winthrop. The collection also includes a history of the of the Peoples national Bank of Rock Hill and The Peoples Trust Company, correspondence, brochures, posters, certificates, and newspaper articles and clippings.
