Scope and Content Note

This collection contains postcards, letters (both personal and business), newsletters, three scrap books, two Winthrop College yearbooks years 1943 & 1945, and photographs. Postcards are mostly German, but contains some French and American, scenes from World War I. Many letters are personal and business correspondence from 1945 some of which pertains to World War II. Two of the scrapbooks belonged to Dr. Walter Buchanan Roberts (1893-1993) who was a professor and director of Music at Winthrop College for 32 years and one of the scrapbooks belonged to his daughter Mary Gene Roberts (1926-2016) who attended the Winthrop Training School (Class of 1942) and graduated from Winthrop College in 1945. Mary Gene Roberts Hardin married James Carlisle Hardin, Jr. (1915-2002). James C. Hardin Jr. and his brother John Anderson Hardin (1920-2010) worked at The Rock Hill Body Shop, with their father James C. Hardin, Sr. (1887-1943), and both entered the U.S. Navy during World War II. Another Winthrop and family connection was Kate Glenn Hardin (1885-1957) who was Dean of Women at Winthrop College from 1932-1951 and was a cousin of James, Jr. and John.
