Historical Note

The Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce was created to promote Rock Hill, SC in an effort to attract new residents and businesses to the area with the intention of “making it a better community.” The Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce was an organization formed by local businessman that can trace its history to 1888 when Captain W. L. Roddey founded the Rock Hill Board of Trade. By 1901 they began to refer to themselves as the Commercial Club and continued to be known as the Commercial Club until it was reorganized as the Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce in 1906 under the direction of John Gary Anderson.

Scope and Content Note

The Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce Records consist of correspondence, lists, brochures, scrapbooks, pamphlets, program notes, magazine issues, newsletters, reports and other records relating to the history and activities of the Chamber of Commerce including its sponsorship of the Rock Hill Community Hotel Corporation Project (Andrew Jackson Hotel); its efforts to make the Landsford Canal a major tourist attraction; its protest of the proposed hydroelectric dam, powerhouse and other facilities on the Catawba River in York, Chester, and Lancaster Counties (The Ebb Lake Mutual Electrical Company Project); and its sponsorship of Rock Hill’s “Come-See-Me Event.” There are issues of the Rock Hill Magazine from 1914-1918 and 1975, which describe activities in the city.

The records of the Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce were deposited with the Archives on March 24 and April 26, 1977.
