Historical Note

The Rock Hill Buggy Company was founded in 1886 by Adlai David “A.D.” Holler (1840-1919) and John Gary Anderson (1861-1937). The company was very successful producing quality buggies and then in 1916, the firm began making automobiles and changed its name to the Anderson Motor Company. The Anderson Motor Company whose moto was “A little Higher in Price but ____.” Despite making high quality vehicles, the company could not compete with cheaper options and the company made its last car in 1924 and closed in 1926.

The Rock Hill Buggy Company/ Anderson Motor Company Records consists of records related to the Rock Hill, SC based company first known as the Rock Hill Buggy Company then the Anderson Motor Company. The collection consists of correspondence, both incoming and outgoing, of John G. Anderson, President; legal papers including deeds and land agreements; meeting minutes; business reports; and stock reports of the Rock Hill Buggy Company of Rock Hill, South Carolina.
