Manuscript Collection

The Winthrop University Manuscript Collection (over 1800 collections) contains unique private papers donated to the Archives by individuals and records from organizations and businesses. These collections not only document local, regional, and state history, but also transcend South Carolina’s borders to include collections that are of broader historical interest. Genealogy is a prominent theme within the collection with these collections containing valuable family history information, including genealogy charts, family histories, scrapbooks, letters, diaries, wills, grants, indentures and biographical data. Much of the material is unpublished and varies in quantity and content from collection to collection.

    This collection consists of memorabilia collected by Gwendolyn Oliver related to Winthrop College. Some of the material relates to her coming to Winthrop for summer conferences while still in high school, while the rest is related to her undergraduate career at Winthrop from 1959-1963. She graduated from Winthrop with Bachelor of Arts in English in 1963. The collection consists of Carolinas Editor’s Conference certificates (1956, 1957), summer session notepads (1955, 1956), and summer session letterhead (1957). Also included are Rat Week Programs (1959), theater and music programs (1959-1963), “Sign Out” Cards (1959-1960), College Laundry cards, Student government Association Card (1959), Certificate of Award for Winthrop Alumnae Scholarship (1959-1960), and a program for “Off To College Banquet: Park Inn Grill” (1961). This collection offers a glimpse of life as a college student at Winthrop from the mid to late 1950s through 1963.

    Willie Laurel Dick Olive (1886-1959) was a Pentecostal evangelist who worked throughout the Carolinas and was the founder of the Elizabeth Temple, largest of the Four Square Gospel Churches, in Concord, NC. The collection consists of a large panoramic photograph print dated September 5, 1923 (or 1926). A Sunday tent service is taking place in Rock Hill, SC. It was nightly at 7:45pm. The photograph consists of hundreds of people standing and sitting outside, in front of a large tent. It has a sign on it stating, “Willie Laurel Olive, Evangelist, Nightly At 7:45, Preaching The Four Square Gospel”. The adults are standing in the rear while the children are in the front mainly sitting on the ground. Within the crowd, there are a few parked automobiles of different models. The photographer was J. W. Moon [James William] of Charlotte, N.C. The photograph measures 32" x 8".

    The Lucy Hardee Olsen War Diary consists of a photograph, newspaper clippings, and a diary titled My War Diary, which was written from December 7, 1941 to February 3, 1945. A typed copy was presented to Mrs. Olsen on the occasion of her eightieth birthday. It is a diary of her experiences as an American held in occupation in the Philippine Islands during the Second World War.

    This collection consists of the records of the Optimist Club of Rock Hill which was founded in 1948 and chartered by Optimist International on January 15, 1949. The Optimist Club of Rock Hill “provides funds through charitable activities to assist the youth of Rock Hill in a number of programs.” The organization sponsors scholarship essays and oratorical contests for youth. The collection consists of a history of the organization, the original charter, pamphlets and flyers, photographs, Optimist International paperwork, Monthly magazines and pamphlets, programs from various dinners, and other records related to the club.

    This collection consists of typescripts and summaries of interviews collected by Winthrop graduate and Buford High School teacher Elizabeth C. Smith during the 1990s. The students were tasked with interviewing persons’ (usually family members) experiences during the Great depression or during World War II. The interviewees discuss what life was like living during the Great Depression and what life was like at home during World War II and what life was like fighting in World War II. This collection will be valuable for any person researching the experiences of everyday people during to these two seminal events during the 21st Century.

    The Orangeburg Massacre Report consists of a Special Report issued by the Southern Regional Council by Pat Watters and Weldon Rougeau concerning the demonstration against segregation that ended in violence in Orangeburg, S.C. on February 8, 1968. Events leading up to the demonstration and the aftermath of the massacre are also covered in the report.

    This collection consists of a photocopied typescript copy of the diary of John Osborn(e) who resided in Union County, North Carolina. The diary spans from January 1, 1800 through October 2, 1802 and offers a detailed account of life on the farm and of the weather in the area. The diary was loaned to the National weather Records Center for microfilming by Miss Clara Laney, Register of Deeds, Union County, Monroe, NC in 1968. The diary includes provenance of the diary up to 1968 and also includes a list of people mentioned and places visited, as well as comments by various researchers who have studied the dairy. The author of the diary (John Osborn(e)) has not been fully identified, however one researcher surmised that John was the youngest son of William Osborne whose household in Mecklenburg County, NC in the 1790 census includes Abel Osborne, Capt. James Osborne, Widow Osborne, Alexander Osborne, Robert Osbourne, and John Osborne.

    This collection consists of a booklet titled A Discourse Before The General Assembly Of South Carolina, On December 10, 1863, Appointed By The Legislature As A Day Of Fasting, Humiliation And Prayer by Benjamin Morgan Palmer, D.D. of New Orleans, Louisiana published in 1864 in Columbia, SC by Charles P. Pelham, State Printer. This booklet consists of a speech by Benjamin Morgan Palmer who noted the significance of December 10, 1863 which had been designated as a day of fasting, humiliation, and prayer and discusses the issues and challenges facing the Confederacy; the motives of the North against the South; and the consequences of defeat.

    This collection consists of a vinyl record produced by WIS Radio Station in Columbia, SC titled "Palmetto Landmarks" on April 10, 1949. The recording was postmarked in June 1949 in an envelope to Radio Station WLAT in Conway SC. The 16 Inch wide record has a run time of 14:30 at 33 1/3 RPM.

    This collection consists of a detailed history of the Rutledge Building and its’ predecessor the Carnegie Library on Winthrop University's campus. The history details the architectural design of the building from its’ inception in 1905-1906 as the Carnegie Library through its’ transformation into the current Rutledge Building as the center for the Department of Arts and Design of the College of Visual and Performing Arts 2002. The collection contains many pictures and detailed descriptions of each renovation and restoration of the building as well as the architectural design of the exterior and interior of the building.

    This collection consists of a photocopy of a thesis titled, The Struggle to Succeed, John Gary Anderson and the Problems of a New South Industrialist by Craig S. Pascoe which was submitted to the faculty of the University of north Carolina at Charlotte in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of History in Charlotte, NC in 1992. This thesis details the history of the Rock Hill Buggy Company and the Anderson Motor Company, as well as a biography of founder, John Gary Anderson (1861-1937) of Rock Hill, SC. The abstract written by the author, Craig S. Pascoe, states his thesis: “Examines the efforts of John Gary Anderson to develop alternative forms of manufacturing in the South. Describes how Anderson built a successful buggy factory and how he converted his operations to manufacturing automobiles in 1916. Explores his efforts to change people’s perception of the South as a backward region. Concludes that the success of manufacturing in the South was hampered by negative attitudes of both Northern and Southern concerns.”

    This collection includes correspondence between Hellen Gurganus Patrick Cruse Cochrane (1891-1979) and Winthrop founder and first president, David Bancroft Johnson (1856-1928) from 1913 to 1916. The letters and telegrams also include recommendations on the behalf of Ms. Patrick for receiving a position at Winthrop College. Also included is a picture of Ms. Patrick, a program for a senior recital from Judson College at Marion, Alabama in 1910, and a personnel file on Ms. Patrick. Ms. Patrick was offered a position in the Winthrop Department of English for the 1916-1917 academic year, originally accepted, but then was offered a job at another institution and backed out of the position at Winthrop.

    The Talbot Patrick Papers consists of newspaper articles written by Mr. Patrick for the Rock Hill, SC Evening Herald from 1953-1979 and were organized in chronological order by Mr. Patrick in a notebook. Mr. Talbot Patrick (1897-1980) was a longtime editor of the Rock Hill Evening Herald newspaper from July 1, 1947 retired in 1975, however he continued to write editorials for the paper until he passed away on January 23, 1980. The majority of articles in the collection were part of his running column titled the “Carolina Traveler” in which he describes his travels and experiences throughout the globe. His travels for the column take him throughout Europe, Asia, and the Middle East through the 1950s through the 1970s. He editorializes on the culture, politics, geography and people of the places he visited including Europe, the Middle East, South America and the Far East. Of special interest are his articles in July 1958 when Mr. Patrick found himself in the middle of the Iraq Revolution when he just happened to be visiting. He witnessed firsthand the overthrow of the Iraqi government and was in Baghdad as the King was put to death and the new government was installed. As a result of his coverage of the events he was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

    The David S. Patton Papers consists of original deeds, receipts, promise to pay bills, lists of prices, an invitation and a will for Colonel Robert Patton (1737-1808) all related to the family of David S. Patton. Most of the documents directly relate to David S. Patton of York District, South Carolina, but some relate to his father Revolutionary War Soldier and Patriot, Colonel Robert Patton, his brother John Patton, and Kittie Patton.     The Margaret Payne Papers consists of letters, pamphlets, photographs, and other material belonging to Margaret Helen Payne (1916-2011) who was a native of Johnston, SC and was a librarian of Conway High School for 25 years and at Wade Hampton in Greenville for 10 years. Most of the material is from Class of 1922 Winthrop Alumna Martha L. Franks (1901-1992), a Baptist Missionary to China. There is also a letter (1946) from Class of 1943 Winthrop Alumna, Ida Crawford Stewart (1922-2023) about Winthrop College while she was employed (1946-1948) as Superintendent of Art Education at the Winthrop Training School. Ida Crawford Stewart was a 6th grade teacher in Conway from 1943-1946 where she became acquainted with Miss Payne.

    The Pearl Harbor Collection consists of 39 bound volumes of the transcripts of the hearings before the Joint Committee on the Investigation of the Pearl Harbor Attack on December 7, 1941 and contains marks and notes produced by the Kimmel family. One volume is a transcript of the Report of the Joint Committee and one is of the Minority Views of the committee. The Hearings Before The Joint Committee span from Part I to Part XXXIX, however Part XX and XXII are missing. There are also 8 volumes of books on Pearl Harbor that were collected by the Kimmel family.

    The collection consists of an address that was given by Rev. C. E. Peele before the Historical Society of the Upper South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Church at Bethel Methodist Church, Spartanburg, SC, on October 30, 1934 and the Historical Society of the South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Church, Kingstree, SC, on November 13, 1934. Peele discusses the origin and development of the Dougherty Manual Labor School of the South Carolina Conference and how it evolved into the Cokesbury Conference Institute.

Family lineage includes coat of arms and 2 handwritten bound volumes.

    This collection consists of photographs, postcards, a commencement program, and other memorabilia collected by Winthrop graduate Constance Pelzer (Class of 1922) while she was at Winthrop. Constance's mother Josephine Bonner Pelzer also attended Winthrop in the late 1890s and was a friend and classmate of Mai Rutledge Smith who later married the founder and first president of Winthrop, David Bancroft Johnson in 1901. This collection provides a good source for women’s history, Winthrop College/University history, and period social/cultural history.

    Descriptive List of Items:

    6 black and white photos (really brownish): 1) Constance Pelzer with her aunt and cousin at empty swimming pool. 2) Dr. “Deeb” Johnson. 3) Pelzer sitting on Winthrop University lawn. 4) Pelzer as College Marshall, with house and tree in background. 5) Narrow strip of photo of Pelzer as Marshall. 6) Small cut from photo of three women seated. Center woman looks like Constance Pelzer.

    16 postcards: Ten postcards of buildings and the garden of Winthrop University are color-tinted. The remaining brown-and-cream postcards show the exterior views of four Winthrop buildings and interior views of the College auditorium and library. Noting the reverse side of the postcards, one was sent with a handwritten message and stamps. The other only had a 1 cent stamp.

    4 print or handwritten items: One partial news clipping congratulates Constance Pelzer for being chosen as College Marshall (among others). Another item is a 1922 Commencement program and list of graduates, including Constance Pelzer on cream cardstock. One of the two handwritten items is an unsigned note (presumably by Constance Pelzer) on a small square of acidic paper describing the friendship of her mother and the wife of President D.B. Johnson and Constance’s subsequent frequent visits with the Johnsons that introduced her to many notable guests (among them Jane Addams and the donor Harry Emerson Fosdick). The other handwritten piece is a letterhead note from Mrs. James W. Duvall, and daughter of Constance Pelzer explaining the donation.

The records consists of photocopies and typescript of deeds, marriage records, wills, newspaper articles and obituaries, letters, genealogical publications, and photographs. Also included are printouts from online genealogical material and email correspondence with other genealogists and family members concerning her research. Most of the research deals directly with the Coltharp Family, however there is some records related to a few allied families including: Bailey; Billue; Epps; Faris; Merritt; Potts; Wagner; Wilson;

    The Peoples Trust Company History consists of a history of the People’s Trust Company of Rock Hill, S.C. from 1906 to 1982. The Company is now the Peoples First Insurance. Included in the history is a list of company officers and longtime employees, various location sites of the company, and other developments relating to the growth of the company. Among the officers of the Company was Dr. J.B. Johnson, the company’s first president.

    The Mary Pitts Perry Papers document the personal collecting activities and institutional connections of Mary Celeste Pitts Perry (b. 1943), a 1962 graduate of the Winthrop Training School. The collection reflects Perry’s longstanding family ties to Winthrop and her interest in preserving materials related to the history of Winthrop College (now Winthrop University), the Winthrop Training School, the city of Rock Hill, and the surrounding Catawba region, as well as selected aspects of her family history.

The marriage license is for the marriage of Baldassare Petruzzella (25 yrs) and Elisa Verciglio (30 yrs) on March 22, 1910. The Italian passport was issued to Luigia Virciglia on September 29, 1876.     The Bessie Kathryn Rodgers Pettus Reminiscence consists of the reminiscences of Mrs. Pettus (1904-2001) who was born in the Indian Land area of upper Lancaster County, South Carolina. She writes of her early childhood living in Lancaster County around Osceola Village and on Hagins Branch in Belair. She also describes life on the farm and the family store and cotton gin. “Her childhood was split between her parents in Osceola Village and living with her grandparents on a small farm. Osceola Village, which no longer exists, was located alongside the Seaboard Railroad. The depot was called Hancock by the railroad and was located northeast of Van Wyck a few miles west of what is now US Highway 521. The Rodgers grandparents lived on Hagins Branch in Belair near a church now called Belair United Methodist Church but in her childhood called Mount Ararat.”

    This collection consists of material that documents the research interest of David Lindsay Pettus in the life, contributions, and continuing legacy of William Richardson Davie. Major General William Richardson Davie (1756-1820) was born in England settled in the Waxhaw region near Lancaster, SC as a boy. He would later serve in the Revolutionary War against the British and after the war rose to prominence as a lawyer. He would then serve in the North Carolina House of Common and as was elected as the 10th Governor of the state. He is also credited with the founding of the University of North Carolina. After he retired from public life, Davie moved to his estate (Tivoli) in Chester County, SC where he died in 1820. The collection includes correspondence, clippings, articles, copies of land grants, plats, photographs, postcards, wills, maps, and various legal documents that details Davie’s legacy.

    The Andrew Pickens Papers consists of microfiche copies of handwritten correspondence (1787, 1792) with George Handley (1752-1793), Alex McGillivray (ca. 1759-1793), Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (1746-1825), Thomas Pinckney (1750-1828), Felix Warley (1749-1814), Richard Winn (1750-1818), and the Chief Little Turkey (1758-1801) and other headmen of the Cherokees regarding politics, land disputes, Indian Lands, ratification of the US Constitution. Also contains miscellaneous accounts and legal papers (1782-1804). Andrew Pickens (1739-1817) was a militia leader, eventually raising to the rank of Brigadier General during the American Revolution and served in the United States House of Representatives from South Carolina from 1793-1795). Pickens and Pickens County, SC were named in his honor.

The company was later acquired by Duke Energy in 2016. The annual reports offer financial highlights and information, letters to shareholders, reviews of operation, directors, officers, and manager information, shareholder information, and other information related to the operation of the company during their fiscal year from 1984-1992.

Also included are congratulatory letters to Jean V. Reames who received her commission to be Governor for the SCDIPC in 1990. The purpose of the Pilot International Club is to promote character development in civic organizations by aiding local Pilot Clubs, and executing the programs and policies of the Pilot Club International.

The longest portion of the correspondence, contained in six letter books, have to do with Thomas Pinckney’s diplomatic service and his service in the War of 1812.
