Manuscript Collection

The Winthrop University Manuscript Collection (over 1800 collections) contains unique private papers donated to the Archives by individuals and records from organizations and businesses. These collections not only document local, regional, and state history, but also transcend South Carolina’s borders to include collections that are of broader historical interest. Genealogy is a prominent theme within the collection with these collections containing valuable family history information, including genealogy charts, family histories, scrapbooks, letters, diaries, wills, grants, indentures and biographical data. Much of the material is unpublished and varies in quantity and content from collection to collection.

    The Petruzella Family photographs consist of a passport, marriage license, and photographs of the Petruzella/Petruzzella and Verciglio/Virciglio families who immigrated to the United States (Alabama) from Sicily in the early 1900s. Most of the photographs and material are related to Baldassare Petruzella/ Petruzzella (1885-1964) and Elisa Verciglio Petruzella/ Petruzzella. The marriage license is for the marriage of Baldassare Petruzzella (25 yrs) and Elisa Verciglio (30 yrs) on March 22, 1910. The Italian passport was issued to Luigia Virciglia on September 29, 1876.     The Bessie Kathryn Rodgers Pettus Reminiscence consists of the reminiscences of Mrs. Pettus (1904-2001) who was born in the Indian Land area of upper Lancaster County, South Carolina. She writes of her early childhood living in Lancaster County around Osceola Village and on Hagins Branch in Belair. She also describes life on the farm and the family store and cotton gin. “Her childhood was split between her parents in Osceola Village and living with her grandparents on a small farm. Osceola Village, which no longer exists, was located alongside the Seaboard Railroad. The depot was called Hancock by the railroad and was located northeast of Van Wyck a few miles west of what is now US Highway 521. The Rodgers grandparents lived on Hagins Branch in Belair near a church now called Belair United Methodist Church but in her childhood called Mount Ararat.”

    This collection consists of material that documents the research interest of David Lindsay Pettus in the life, contributions, and continuing legacy of William Richardson Davie. Major General William Richardson Davie (1756-1820) was born in England settled in the Waxhaw region near Lancaster, SC as a boy. He would later serve in the Revolutionary War against the British and after the war rose to prominence as a lawyer. He would then serve in the North Carolina House of Common and as was elected as the 10th Governor of the state. He is also credited with the founding of the University of North Carolina. After he retired from public life, Davie moved to his estate (Tivoli) in Chester County, SC where he died in 1820. The collection includes correspondence, clippings, articles, copies of land grants, plats, photographs, postcards, wills, maps, and various legal documents that details Davie’s legacy.

The contents of this collection include a large collection of articles Louise Pettus wrote for local newspapers, genealogical information concerning local families that Louise was using for her research, information concerning cities, towns, and counties in South Carolina such as Rock Hill, York, Lancaster, Chester, Van Wyck, Bel Air, Kershaw and Indian Land, biographical material concerning Louise Pettus and her brother Lindsay Pettus, information concerning the Catawba Indians, information concerning the Katawba Valley Land Trust, information concerning Winthrop University, local cemetery and church information, political memorabilia owned by Louise Pettus, general historical materials concerning South Carolina, general historical materials pertaining to history outside of South Carolina, books pertaining to local families and genealogy, photographs concerning Louise Pettus, her life, and her activities, photographs pertinent to local history, publications written by Louise Pettus such as Lancaster County: A Pictorial History, maps of land plots and places located in the Catawba Region, copies of Mecklenburg Genealogical Society Mecklenburg Messengers, and a collection of obituaries primarily focused on people who lived and died in the Catawba Region.

    The Katherine Adelaide Pfohl Papers consist of two photographs, thirty seven books, and approximately eighty slides. Katherine Pfohl (1908-2012) was a professor of Music Faculty at Winthrop College from 1946-1972. Most of the collection pertains to her career at Winthrop and would be useful to any researchers looking into the Music Program and Music majors at Winthrop College from the 1940s through the 1970s.

    The Phi Delta Kappa Records consists of materials related to the Piedmont South Carolina Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa Association by Dr. Martha D. Bishop. Phi Delta Kappa is an international professional organization for educators. Their mission is “to promote quality education, with particular emphasis on publicly supported education, as essential to the development and maintenance of a democratic way of life.” The Piedmont South Carolina Chapter (No. 1363) of Phi Delta Kappa was based in Rock Hill, SC. The collection consists of by-laws, meeting minutes, agendas, roster rolls, financial reports, publications, a scrapbook, and other miscellaneous items.

Also included in the collection are biographical sketches of Robert Pace and copies of Robert Pace’s recital sheets.

    The Andrew Pickens Papers consists of microfiche copies of handwritten correspondence (1787, 1792) with George Handley (1752-1793), Alex McGillivray (ca. 1759-1793), Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (1746-1825), Thomas Pinckney (1750-1828), Felix Warley (1749-1814), Richard Winn (1750-1818), and the Chief Little Turkey (1758-1801) and other headmen of the Cherokees regarding politics, land disputes, Indian Lands, ratification of the US Constitution. Also contains miscellaneous accounts and legal papers (1782-1804). Andrew Pickens (1739-1817) was a militia leader, eventually raising to the rank of Brigadier General during the American Revolution and served in the United States House of Representatives from South Carolina from 1793-1795). Pickens and Pickens County, SC were named in his honor.

    This collection consists of the yearly annual reports produced by the Piedmont Natural Gas Company from 1984 through 1992. The Piedmont Natural Gas, Company, Inc. traces its roots back to 1950 when it was incorporated in New York. The company is engaged in the purchase, distribution, and sale of natural gas to residential, industrial, and commercial customers in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee with headquarters in Charlotte, NC. The company was later acquired by Duke Energy in 2016. The annual reports offer financial highlights and information, letters to shareholders, reviews of operation, directors, officers, and manager information, shareholder information, and other information related to the operation of the company during their fiscal year from 1984-1992.

    The Pilot Club International was a service oriented club for women, however men are now allowed to join. The South Carolina District was founded in the 1930s for “the promotion of social welfare through the performance of civil and beneficial service of the character generally accomplished by civic organizations, rendering aid and assistance to local Pilot Clubs and implementing at the district level the programs and policies of Pilot Club International.” The Pilot Club International South Carolina District Records consist of a certificate of incorporation, minutes, annual reports, correspondence, resolutions and lists of standing rules.

    This collection consists of records from the South Carolina District Pilot International Club. The collection includes records from SCDPIC annual conventions as well as records regarding the district administrative council and fall council. Included are minutes, governor reports, treasurer reports, secretary reports, convention agendas, rules for the conventions, as well as programs and itinerary’s for convention proceedings. Also included are congratulatory letters to Jean V. Reames who received her commission to be Governor for the SCDIPC in 1990. The purpose of the Pilot International Club is to promote character development in civic organizations by aiding local Pilot Clubs, and executing the programs and policies of the Pilot Club International.

    The Esther Surasky Pinck Papers consist of correspondence and newspaper clippings, relating to the Pinck, Surasky, and Polier families, together with concert, literary, and drama programs, newsletters, photographs, citations, poems, and memorabilia. The papers contain information on Mrs. Pinck’s years at Winthrop and her extensive work for Jewish causes, such as the United Jewish Appeal, the Jewish National Fund, Technion, Hadassah, and the Hebrew Home for the Aged. There is also a biographical file on Mrs. Pinck’s husband, Dr. Louis A. Pinck, who was a chemist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

    The Pinckney Family Papers consists of correspondence of Eliza Pinckney, Charles Cotesworth, and Thomas Pinckney; Benjamin Huger; Rebecca Mott, John Q. Adams; Joseph Alston; Lord Charles Grenville; Alexander Hamilton; Thomas Jefferson; Marquis de Lafayette, and others. The longest portion of the correspondence, contained in six letter books, have to do with Thomas Pinckney’s diplomatic service and his service in the War of 1812. The next largest group of letters is that of Eliza Pinckney. Also included are household accounts and family receipts; land, legal, estate, and other papers.

    The Martha Kime Piper Papers consist of speeches, letters, and newspaper articles relating to Dr. Piper’s time as Chancellor of the University of Houston-Victoria (Texas), her acceptance of the presidency of Winthrop College and her death. Dr. Martha Kime Piper (1932-1988) was Winthrop’s 8th president (1986-1988) and first female president.

    This collection consists of a "Teacher's Monthly School Report" for Pleasant Hill School in Horry County, South Carolina taught in School District No. 3 for August 20, 1888 through September 12, 1888. N. W. Cooper is listed as the Principal Teacher and the report was attest to by N. E. Dryer (?), Clerk Board of Trustees. Included in this collection is a blank "Teacher's Pay Certificate."

    This collection consists of a copy of a photograph, which is of William Harvey Poag, Jr. (1863-1943), and his grandson, William (Sonny) Harvey Poag, III (1940-1959). In the photograph, William Harvey Poag, Jr., is holding his grandson at Thornwood Farm, a farm he owned in Macon, Mississippi. Both are buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Macon, Mississippi.

    The South Carolina Political Science Association Records consist of records produced by the organization. The South Carolina Political Science Association was founded in 1967 “to encourage understanding and to improve instruction in areas of Political Science through discussion and research. A further purpose shall be that of improving relations among members of the faculties of South Carolina universities, colleges, and secondary schools, and public officials.” The collection consists of constitutions and bylaws, correspondence, minutes, financial records, memoranda, research papers, brochures, membership lists, profile sheets of the South Carolina Party Activists Bill, newspaper clippings (Xeroxed), and case studies.

    This collection consists of a photocopy and a typescript copy of a letter from Isaac N. Pollard to his brother Austin on June 12, 1817 while serving in the 4th or 7th regiment during the First Seminole War. Isaac wrote the letter while stationed in Cantoment “Monteplier” in Alabama. He mentions previously being stationed at Camp Scott which was on the bank of the Flint River in Georgia and also mentions Fort Johnson and joining his regiment in Charleston Harbor. The Letter tells of Isaac N. Pollard’s experiences away from his family while fighting in the First Seminole War. The letter was transcribed by his Great, Great, Great Grandson Harry M. Miller, Jr. The Original is owned by Mrs. Hazel Dawkins Cape, of Union, SC who is a Great, Great Granddaughter of Isaac N. Pollard.

D., Professor Of Law which was printed by the Presbyterian Publishing House, Columbia, SC in 1892. The address focuses on the history and advantages of the South Carolina College (now University of South Carolina) to the state of South Carolina. It discusses the history of the state and how the South Carolina College has impacted it's growth and the impact it's graduates have had on the state and beyond.

The collection pertains to Dr. Powell’s work as a Winthrop faculty member, scholar and specialist in family and child development and her involvement with such organizations as the Christian Children’s Fund and the Southeastern Council on Family Relations. The material extends from Dr. Powell’s days as a student and young wife in Florida (1940-1959), with most of the substantive material extending from 1960 to 1976.

Some motor vehicle registrations are present, as well as a title.

    The Presbyterian Church of Bethel is located in York County and was organized by Scotch-Irish immigrants from Pennsylvania in 1764. The Presbyterian Church of Bethel History was originally compiled in 1887 by the church’s fifth pastor, the Rev. R.A. Webb, and issued by the Ladies Aid Society, the history was revised in 1938.

The Pamphlet is titled, The Election of 1880 in South Carolina: Address of the State Executive Committee of the Union Republican party of South Carolina, Detailing The Frauds, Violence and Intimidation, By Which South Carolina Was Carried For Hancock and was printed by J. W. Hammond, Charleston, SC in 1880.

    The Pringle Family Letters consist of typescript copies of letters written by Mary Pringle Mitchell (1831-1901) of New Haven, Connecticut and one written by her brother, Edward Jenkins Pringle (1820-1899) of California, to her family in South Carolina during the course of the American Civil War and their views on it. The letters offer insight into the life of a "Southern lady" living deep within "enemy territory" Civil War. These letters were edited by Stuart Lee Butler in 1977 and include biographical notes on the Pringles and those mentioned in the letters as well as explanatory notes.

    The Project Tap Collection consists of two copies of I am Not Born Yet But I Have A Looking Glass: Student Poetry Project Tap edited by Michael Waters and published by the South Carolina Arts: Commission: Columbia, SC in 1975. The publication consist of student poetry from Chester District Schools (Dora Jones-Gayle Elementary School, Southside Elementary School, and York Road Elementary School), Fort Mill District Schools (Fort Mill Senior High and Fort Mill Junior High), and Lancaster County Schools (Buford High, Erwin Elementary, Flat Creek Elementary, Indian Land Elementary, and Kershaw Middle School). Project TAP (Total Arts Program) was created to place artists in the participating public schools.

    The South Carolina Psychological Association (SCPA) was incorporated on April 1, 1955 for the purpose of advancing “psychology as a science, as a profession, and as a means of promoting human welfare.” The South Carolina Psychological Association Records consists of a photocopy of the certificate of incorporation (1955), constitution and bylaws, event programs, invitations, correspondence, newsletters, histories, photographs, and other records related to the activities of SCPA. The collection arrived in three 2-inch binders. Two of these binders contained issues of Feedback the SCPA quarterly newsletter. The third binder contained information about the fiftieth anniversary of incorporation of the SCPA. Some of the information contained in this binder consists of firsts for the SCPA (such as first female president, first president, etc.), the association’s constitution and bylaws, and conference itineraries, as well as a miscellany file which the association included in the binder.

George Washington Cable was an American novelist notable for the realism of his portrayals of Creole life in his native Louisiana as well as his sympathy for civil rights and opposition towards the harsh racism of the era and his friendship with Mark Twain.

This collection consists of records including attendance records from her time at Lugoff Elementary School in Kershaw County, S.C., Sutton Springs School, Cotton Belt School, and York Elementary School in York County, SC.

The letter also contains a good description of family life on a west Tennessee farm at the time.

William Wallace Ratchford (1831-1921) to Tirzah Presbyterian Church in Union County, NC, legal documents including deeds to properties and a “Lien on Crops,” a Dixie Cotton Company financial ledger, photographs of family and friends, correspondence, school papers related to William Erwin Ratchford (1865-1944) who attended the Bingham School in Orange County, NC, and three college annuals belonging to family members.

E. Miller at the request of the South Carolina Society. William George Read was the Principal of the South Carolina Society’s Male Academy and delivered the address on July 2, 1827. The Male Academy was a secondary school located in Charleston, SC. The address concerns the state of education in South Carolina and the South at the time and the plans for the curriculum and organization of the new Male Academy.
