Scope and Content Note
The Margaret Payne Papers consists of letters, pamphlets, photographs, and other material belonging to Margaret Helen Payne (1916-2011) who was a native of Johnston, SC and was a librarian of Conway High School for 25 years and at Wade Hampton in Greenville for 10 years. Most of the material is from Class of 1922 Winthrop Alumna Martha L. Franks (1901-1992), a Baptist Missionary to China. There is also a letter (1946) from Class of 1943 Winthrop Alumna, Ida Crawford Stewart (1922-2023) about Winthrop College while she was employed (1946-1948) as Superintendent of Art Education at the Winthrop Training School. Ida Crawford Stewart was a 6th grade teacher in Conway from 1943-1946 where she became acquainted with Miss Payne.
