Historical Note
Francis Wilkinson Pickens (1805/7-1869) was a South Carolina politician who served in the State House of Representatives (1832-1834), the US House of Representatives (1834-1843), the South Carolina Senate (1844-1846), was US Minister to Russia (1858-1860), and was South Carolina Governor (1860-1862). He was Governor of South Carolina at the beginning of the American Civil War and sanctioned the firing upon the Star of the West which marked the commencement of the war.
Scope and Content Note
The South Carolina Governor Francis Wilkinson Pickens Accounts collection consists of microfiche copies of Governor Pickens’ accounts with the Bank of the State of South Carolina for military contingencies during the American Civil War which includes amounts of checks, monthly balances, and drafts on the account.
