Accession 996 - M438 (489)The John Forsyth Letters consist of a letter dated July 11, 1813 from John Forsyth (1780-1841), United States Representative from Georgia, to William Jones (1760-1831) secretary of the Navy from January 12, 1813 to December 2, 1814 concerning a young gentleman B.W. Miller of Georgia. The collection also contains a letter dated January 17, 1835 from John Forsyth, Secretary of State to Senator John C. Calhoun of South Carolina, Chairman of the Select Committee on Executive Patronage transmitting a list of people connected with the State Department in 1833. Forsyth was born in Virginia in 1780 but had moved to Georgia by age four. He graduated from Princeton in 1799, served in the United States House of Representatives from 1813 to 1818, served in United States Senate 1818 to 1819, served as Minister to Spain 1819-1821, served again in United States House 1823-1827, elected Governor of Georgia in 1827, Served as Secretary of State from July 1, 1834 to March 3, 1837. He died on October 2, 1841.

These items were donated by Ms. Foster’s great-granddaughter, Jean Wells, former Winthrop Assistant Professor in the Ida Jane Dacus Library.

Accession 615The Fraser-Winthrop Papers consists of microfiche copies of “Sketches from Nature” by Alexander Fraser (1722-1860), a plantation owner and S.C. state legislator, and Charles Fraser (1782-1860), a Charleston, S.C. attorney and artist. The “Sketches” contain low country plantation and theater scenes, and studies of flowers and insects. Also included are notes (ca. 1700-1898) on the Winthrop family of Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, and Charleston, South Carolina, two letters (1842, 1844) to Joseph Augustus Winthrop (1791-1864), Charleston, and seven letters (1806-1846) from Charles Fraser to his sisters and Miss Mary Witherspoon of Charleston.

Frayser Papers consist of correspondence, speeches, reports, clippings, minutes, histories, family histories, constitutions and bylaws, membership lists, program notes, photographs, and other papers, relating to her work with the South Carolina Extension Service (1912-1940) Winthrop College, her involvement with the South Carolina Council for the Common Good (1935-1952), the South Carolina Federation of Women’s Clubs (1926-1952), the South Carolina Status of Women Conference (1945-1952), the South Carolina Division of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) (1929, 1935-1949), the South Carolina Interracial Institute (1938-1942), the South Carolina Division of the Southern Regional Council (1944-1951), and the South Carolina Conference of Social Work (1936-1967). There are also papers relating to Frayser’s efforts to promote social and economic legislation and participation by women in public affairs and her interest in libraries and work in the movement for the support of public libraries in South Carolina (1925-1968). Correspondents included G.H. Aull, Evan Chesterman, Wil Lou Gray, Sarah Hughes, Christine South Gee, and Maude Massey Rogers. This collection is a good source of women’s club activities in the twentieth century. Important areas of research would include the way club activity affected social and economic legislation in the state and the various forces involved in the movement for state tax supported libraries. While the papers do range from 1841 to 1953, the greater bulk of the papers extend from the early 1930s to about 1947. Since the work of the various women's club organizations were so inter-related, a researcher working with the papers of a particular organization for a particular time span should consider the Frayser papers of all other organizations. The related papers for the “Correspondence and Related Papers” series for particular organizations are generally similar and include: memoranda, outlines, reports, resolutions, minutes, etc. Additional Frayser information can be found by referring to the Winthrop University Archives (official records).

Chesterman, who wrote for the Richmond Evening Journal, newspaper clippings, and photographs. Correspondents include her sister Ellie Douglas Frayser Chesterman (1876-1958) and, Mary’s brother-in-law, Evan Ragland Chesterman, Sr. (1870-1931). Mary Elizabeth Frayser (1868-1968) was a South Carolina educator, social worker, home economist, and club woman.

Accession 78The Grace Beacham Freeman Papers documents the development of Mrs. Freeman’s career as a writer from 1948 to the 1960s as well as her relationship with various members of her family. The collection is divided into two groups. The first, her personal files, mainly includes family and personal correspondence, biographical materials, genealogical charts and histories and other papers concerning her children. The second group, her professional files, includes Mrs. Freeman’s prose, poetry, plays and radio scripts as well as correspondence with publishers, editors and Archibald Rutledge, her friend and critic. The subject files consist of reference materials that Mrs. Freeman used for story ideas. There is much information relevant to York County history, including the York County Nature Museum, Glencairn Garden and the Catawba Indians. Related material will include the official college records, since Mrs. Freeman was involved with Dr. Kathryn Powell’s Title I Education project for quality preschool education and since Mrs. Freeman is a former employee of Winthrop.

Accession 1570 - M767 (824)This collection contains a book, Sermon on the re-opening of St. Stephen’s Church: at St. Stephen’s Parish, S.C., April 4, 1852. by Rev. C. P. Gadsden, Assistant Minister of St. Stephen’s and Upper St. John’s which was published in Charleston, SC by Steam Power-Press Of Walker and James in 1852 at the request of the congregation. The sermon details the history of the church, its leaders, and its congregation from its establishment in 1754 on the south side of the Santee River in modern Berkeley County. The current brick church was completed (according to the sermon) in 1767 which replaced the previous wooden structure with Rev. Alexander Keith, A.M. serving as its first rector until he left the province in 1773. The sermon itself took place on April 4, 1852 following the reopening of the church after it received repairs. Rev. Christopher Philip Gadsden (1825-1871) was ordained in December 1849 and was the founder and first rector of St. Luke’s Church.

Gaffney from his arrival in America from Ireland in 1797 to 1853.

It deals with several issues regarding South Carolina’s debt: how much it was, how it should be paid, and the ability of the state and its citizens to pay it. Martin Witherspoon Gary was a Confederate Brigadier General during the American Civil War and an attorney and politician from South Carolina. He served in the State Senate from 1876-1881 and aided Wade Hampton III in his campaign to become South Carolina Governor in 1876.

Dr. Geddings (1838-1892) was born in Charleston, SC and studied medicine at the Medical College of South Carolina. He later lived in Aiken, SC and championed the climate in the area as perfect for those that suffered from pulmonary diseases and tuberculosis. In this booklet Dr. Geddings discusses at length the health benefits of the climate of Aiken, South Carolina as compared to other areas of the country.

The collection primarily pertains to Mrs. Gee’s work as South Carolina State Home Demonstration Agent (1918-1923); her role in the formation of the South Carolina Extension Homemakers’ Council (1921), formerly the South Carolina Council of Farm Women; her activities as president of the South Carolina Council for the Common Good (1943-1945); her study of development in programs for adult education and rural women; and her historical interest in South Carolina statesmen and political leaders. Family histories include information on the Puckett, Smith, Martin, Hudgens, McNeese, Rodgers, and Saxon families.

Dr. Harold Brite Gilbreth (1908-1988) worked at Winthrop College from 1935-1974 as a professor of Business, Chairman of the Department of Business and Economics, and as the Director of Graduate Studies.

Accession 1103The collection consists of architectural drawings and other related items of Alfred D. Gilchrist (1873-1944). Gilchrist predominately operated in South Carolina and North Carolina from 1913 to 1940. He started working in Rock Hill, SC as the manager of the Rock Hill office of Hook and Rogers, Architects in 1913 and by 1920, he opened his own office in Rock Hill which he maintained through 1940.
The drawings consist of homes, public buildings (i.e. schools, city government buildings, etc.), and private businesses that were mainly located in York County (SC) and Chester County (SC). Some of Mr. Gilchrist’s architectural drawings were done in other cities/locations including: Blackstock, (SC), Darlington (SC), Dillon (SC), Gaffney (SC), Kershaw (SC), Lancaster (SC), Liberty Hill (SC), Mullins (SC), Morganton (NC), Shelby (NC), Winnsboro (SC), Winston-Salem (NC).
