Accession 429The South Carolina Association of Future Homemakers of America Records are a valuable source on the history of girls’ home economics clubs in South Carolina from 1948 to 1983. While the first club was organized in 1933 to promote an appreciation of home life and to further interest in home economics on the part of young women in the state, the records do not begin until 1936. The collection consists of correspondence, organizational records, bylaws, handbooks, workbooks, minutes from meetings, agendas from conventions, club reports from the different county chapters, The Livewire (newsletter), photographs, slides, film, negatives, scrapbooks, photograph albums, banners, and emblems. The purpose of the Association is to promote an appreciation of home life, to encourage democracy in home and community, to foster the development of creative leadership, to provide wholesale individual and group recreation and to further interest in home economics. The collection also contains records relating to the New Homemakers Association (NHA) which affiliated with the South Carolina FHA in 1965.

Accession 1570 - M767 (824)This collection contains a book, Sermon on the re-opening of St. Stephen’s Church: at St. Stephen’s Parish, S.C., April 4, 1852. by Rev. C. P. Gadsden, Assistant Minister of St. Stephen’s and Upper St. John’s which was published in Charleston, SC by Steam Power-Press Of Walker and James in 1852 at the request of the congregation. The sermon details the history of the church, its leaders, and its congregation from its establishment in 1754 on the south side of the Santee River in modern Berkeley County. The current brick church was completed (according to the sermon) in 1767 which replaced the previous wooden structure with Rev. Alexander Keith, A.M. serving as its first rector until he left the province in 1773. The sermon itself took place on April 4, 1852 following the reopening of the church after it received repairs. Rev. Christopher Philip Gadsden (1825-1871) was ordained in December 1849 and was the founder and first rector of St. Luke’s Church.

It was edited and issued by the Gaffney Chamber of Commerce and contains diary entries with biographical comments tracing “the travels, adventures, trials, quaint observations and industrial conquests” of Capt. Gaffney from his arrival in America from Ireland in 1797 to 1853.

Accession 1285 - M628 (682)This is a published speech that Hon. Martin Witherspoon Gary (1831-1881), senator from Edgefield County, delivered to the state Senate titled, Speech Of Honorable M.W. Gary On The Public Debt Of The State Of South Carolina. It deals with several issues regarding South Carolina’s debt: how much it was, how it should be paid, and the ability of the state and its citizens to pay it. Martin Witherspoon Gary was a Confederate Brigadier General during the American Civil War and an attorney and politician from South Carolina. He served in the State Senate from 1876-1881 and aided Wade Hampton III in his campaign to become South Carolina Governor in 1876.

There is also a 16mm film describing the dedication ceremonies of the Bethel Home Demonstration Club of Sumter, South Carolina, the first of its kind in the United States. Correspondents include Strom Thurmond, US Senator from South Carolina; Donald Russell, former South Carolina governor and United States senator; Olin D. Johnston, former South Carolina governor and United States senator; Corinne B. Riley, representative of South Carolina; and Anna H. Huntington, sculptress (see Box 12-Folder 36).

Geddings, M.D. of Aiken, S.C. written in 1877 published in Charleston, SC by Walker, Evans & Cogswell, Printers. Dr. Geddings (1838-1892) was born in Charleston, SC and studied medicine at the Medical College of South Carolina. He later lived in Aiken, SC and championed the climate in the area as perfect for those that suffered from pulmonary diseases and tuberculosis. In this booklet Dr. Geddings discusses at length the health benefits of the climate of Aiken, South Carolina as compared to other areas of the country.

The collection primarily pertains to Mrs. Gee’s work as South Carolina State Home Demonstration Agent (1918-1923); her role in the formation of the South Carolina Extension Homemakers’ Council (1921), formerly the South Carolina Council of Farm Women; her activities as president of the South Carolina Council for the Common Good (1943-1945); her study of development in programs for adult education and rural women; and her historical interest in South Carolina statesmen and political leaders. Family histories include information on the Puckett, Smith, Martin, Hudgens, McNeese, Rodgers, and Saxon families.

Many of the records are concerned with China’s political and social changes including China’s Nationalist and Student Movements during Gee’s stay in China.
Nathaniel Gist Gee (1876-1937), born in Union, SC, was a professor of Natural Science at Soochow University and Yenching University in China from 1901-1932.

Accession 862 - M384 (435)The George Peabody Stamp Committee Records consists of a letter to Dr. Anthony DiGiorgio, President of Winthrop from Peter Torigian, Mayor, City of Peabody, MA thanking him for his letter of support for the effort to have George Peabody (1795-1869) American philanthropist put on a stamp. A copy of the proposal sent to the United States Postal Service which includes a biographical sketch, a graphic illustrating the geographical scope and amount of money given, a list of Congressional Endorsements, and copies of letters of support from varying institutions and other beneficiaries of Peabody’s generosity.

Accession 876The Edwin Martin Gettys Papers consist of materials related to Edwin Gettys tenure as a member and chairman of the Rock Hill City Planning Commission. The purpose of the Rock Hill City Planning Commission was “to prepare plans, make recommendations and advise the City Council on matters pertaining to the orderly physical development of the community.” Edwin Martin Gettys (1923-1995) was a member of the Commission from 1967-1978 and Chaiman of the Commission from 1978-1987. Most of the collection documents the growth and planning of Rock Hill, SC from 1967 through 1987 and is a great source for anyway researching the growth of Rock Hill, SC during that timeframe which included the construction of Dave Lyle Boulevard and the Town Center Mall project. The collection itself consists of business correspondence, memoranda, reports, books, and other publications, and miscellany relation to Mr. Gettys’ service on the Rock Hill City Planning Commission.

The Thomas Smithwick Gettys Papers consist of reports, resolutions, correspondence, news releases, government publications, and newspaper clippings, relating to Getty’s efforts to enlarge and develop the Cowpens Battlefield Site of Cherokee County, South Carolina. Correspondents include Ernest Hollings, Donald Russell, John P. Saylor, W.S. Stuckey, Jr., Roy A. Taylor, Mark W. Clark, Wayne Aspinall, and Stewart Udall.

The collection also consists of college catalogs, applications, state laws and manuscripts related to “diploma Mills” which Dr. Gilbreth began collecting in 1968 as a personal hobby. Dr. Harold Brite Gilbreth (1908-1988) worked at Winthrop College from 1935-1974 as a professor of Business, Chairman of the Department of Business and Economics, and as the Director of Graduate Studies.

Accession 1103The collection consists of architectural drawings and other related items of Alfred D. Gilchrist (1873-1944). Gilchrist predominately operated in South Carolina and North Carolina from 1913 to 1940. He started working in Rock Hill, SC as the manager of the Rock Hill office of Hook and Rogers, Architects in 1913 and by 1920, he opened his own office in Rock Hill which he maintained through 1940.
The drawings consist of homes, public buildings (i.e. schools, city government buildings, etc.), and private businesses that were mainly located in York County (SC) and Chester County (SC). Some of Mr. Gilchrist’s architectural drawings were done in other cities/locations including: Blackstock, (SC), Darlington (SC), Dillon (SC), Gaffney (SC), Kershaw (SC), Lancaster (SC), Liberty Hill (SC), Mullins (SC), Morganton (NC), Shelby (NC), Winnsboro (SC), Winston-Salem (NC).

T. Anderson: Confederate Prisoner of War 1864-1865 by Margaret Anderson Harden (1908). Lt. Samuel Thompson of Anderson (1838-1894) was a Confederate soldier during the American Civil War in Co. D 1st South Carolina Cavalry. The genealogical records relate to the following families: Anderson, Wylie. McCalla, McKown, Yeamans, Moore (i.e., Governor James Moore) and Adair.

Accession 325This collection is a valuable source of girl scouting records in South Carolina during the twentieth century. While the Carolina Low Country Girl Scouts (CLCGS) was chartered in 1924, the records begin earlier with the organization of the CLCGS and continue until the late 1970s. The collection consists of organizational records, financial records, troop registrations and membership lists, news releases, Juliette Low Region VI records, newsletters, and records relating to camps and annual conventions. Other records include program activities, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, photographs, slides, and memorabilia.These records give a good overview of the CLCGS’ history. They also provide a good representation of girl scouting and the events and activities which accompany an organization of this kind.

Accession 1332 - M666 (720)The Robert M. Glover Collection consists of records concerning the Crawford and Williams Family descended from Col. Thomas Williams (1789-1858) and Martha White Crawford Williams (1778?-1833) of York, SC. Col. Williams served as Lt. Gov. of SC from 1828-1830 and later moved his family to Montgomery, Alabama. Martha White Crawford Williams was the daughter of Maj. Robert Crawford (1728-1801) and Jean White Crawford (1742-1804). Maj. Crawford was the uncle of Andrew Jackson. The collection contains photocopies of biographical information including “Major Robert Crawford: Waxhaws Militia-South Carolina Line Revolutionary War” prepared and read before Waxhaws Chapter D.A.R. by Miss Mary Forest McAdams Lancaster, SC in 1949, and excepts concerning the Crawford and Williams Families (mostly Col. Thomas Williams) from Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution by Bobby Gilmer Moss (1983), Crawford Family Records by William M. Clemens (1914), History of Williamsburg by William Willis Boddie (1923), Biographical Sketches of the Bench and Bar of South Carolina by John Belton O’Neall (1859), and Reminiscences of Public Men in Alabama by William Garrett (1872). The collection also contains family charts and genealogical information, copies of 19th century photographs of family members (many of which were taken by John R. Schorb of York(ville), SC), photocopies of deeds and plats, and other family records related to the Crawford, Williams, and Clawson families predominantly from York, SC and Chester, SC from 1728 through 1949. The collection also includes correspondence between the creator of this collection, Robert M. Glover and genealogists and several representatives of historical organizations in York County concerning the families.

Accession 1063 - M479 (529)This collection consists of a copy of The South Carolina Historical Magazine for April 2001 which contains an article titled “Setting The Mark : Lucile Godbold and The First International Track Meet For Women” by Jane P. Tuttle. The article was written about the life and athletic career of Lucile Ellerbe “Ludy” Godbold (1900-1981) who was a 1919 and 1920 graduate of Winthrop College. Ludy won a gold medal in the shot put, a bronze in the javelin throw, and finished fourth in the 300 meter and 1000 meter race at the first International Track Meet for Women in Paris in 1922. This meet is considered the forerunner of women’s Olympic competition. Her Gold medal winning throw in the shot put broke the world record. She taught at Columbia College in Columbia, South Carolina for 58 years and was the first woman elected to the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 1961.

The thesis is a study of Juanita Goggins’ struggle to become the first African American female to serve in the South Carolina House of Representatives. Mrs. Goggins was elected to represent house district 49 in 1974 and served until 1979.

Accession 1764This collection consists mostly of memorabilia concerning Jane Goodall collected by Linda Driggers Williams (Winthrop Class of 1964, ‘69, ’82). Jane Goodall (b. 1934) is a conservationist and primatologist most known for her long-term study of wild chimpanzees in Tanzania and came to Rock Hill, SC in 1990 to lecture at Winthrop College and at the York County Museum. Contents include four books concerning Jane Goodall, three magazines concerning Jane Goodall, two photographs and three negatives of Jane Goodall, four newspaper articles concerning Jane Goodall, a Jane Goodall T-shirt, and a hard copy and digital copy of a talk given by Jane Goodall at the Museum of York County in 1990.

Accession 720 - M328 (379)The Benny Goodman Concert Albums Collection consists of an autographed copy of Benny Goodman's (1909-1986) two record set of his famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert in New York. Goodman, dubbed the “King of Swing” was the first major bandleader to use a racially integrated band and this concert was the first with an integrate band in Carnegie Hall. The Goodman autograph is on the back and reads "To Winthrop College Best Wishes, Benny Goodman." This particular edition was released in 1963. The article also details some of the connections between Grace Lutheran Church and Winthrop including the location of Grace Lutheran Church in part being a desire to be close to the school. Also included in this collection is a letter from Winthrop graduate, Naomi Banks Bridges to Gina Price White, Director of the Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections which details Mrs. Bridges personal connection to Winthrop. Her husband Gus Bridges’ mother Lucile Bridges was a Winthrop graduate and was one of the 23 charter members when Grace was organized in 1923 Also, her two daughters, Kathy and Linda, also graduated from Winthrop.

Accession 1514 - M738 (795)This collection of a remembrance of the Mount Holly School from a former student in the 1940s by Pat Hollis Grant. This reminiscence includes a history of the school and offers details of everyday wartime and post-wartime life for families in the Rock Hill area. The Mount Holly School was located a on Highway 901 in Rock Hill, SC across the street from Mount Holly United Methodist Church where a baseball field is today. The school can trace its roots to the Shiloh School in the mid-1800s and became Mount Holly School when a new school was built on a hilltop in 1914. The school received its name in part because of the presence of a Holly Tree in front of the Shiloh Methodist Church which prompted the church to change its name to Mount Holly Methodist Church. Mount Holly School was incorporated into the Rock Hill School District in 1916 and remained a part of the system until the school burned down on March 25, 1949.
