Historical Note
Augusta Bridgland Middleton Fothergill was born in Lexington, Virginia on 3 February 1876. She was a genealogist, historian, and author. In addition to Wills of Westmoreland County, she also wrote Virginia Tax Payers 1782-1787 and Marriage Records of Brunswick County, Virginia 1730-1852 among others. She died in Richmond, Virginia on 9 September 1965 and is buried in Lexington, Virginia.
Scope and Content Note
Wills of Westmoreland County, Virginia 1654-1800 by Augusta B. Fothergill is a compilation of will abstracts with an index. Also included is a piece titled "A Scandal Refuted" about an "inaccurate and scurrilous article on the Washington family" in which Mrs. Fothergill refutes erroneous information found in the article titled "The Washington Pedigree: Conigenda and Addenda" by Charles H. Browning. Please see the attached scan of the index.

Winthrop purchased the book from Baker and Taylor in 1934 for $6.75.
