Scope and Content Note

The Civic Directory of the S. D. Barron Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Iredell Jones Chapter, Children of the Confederacy Collection consists of a 1967 printed directory and datebook produced jointly by the S. D. Barron Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy (Chapter No. 234) and the Iredell Jones Chapter, Children of the Confederacy (Chapter No. 85).

The publication serves as both a civic directory and organizational handbook. It includes sections on “Red Letter Days,” as well as the organizations’ ritual, creed, and prayer; lists of officers and members; meeting schedules; and historical sketches of both chapters. Additional content includes a business and professional directory, advertisements, monthly calendars for 1967, and a personal telephone index.

The S. D. Barron Chapter, organized in 1898, was named in honor of Samuel DeKalb Barron, a York County native associated with the early observance of Memorial Day exercises in the region. Since its founding, the chapter has been active in historical commemoration, educational initiatives, and community service in Rock Hill, including support for libraries, student scholarships, and memorial projects such as the Confederate monument at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church. The chapter also sponsored the Iredell Jones Chapter, established in the early twentieth century to engage younger members in historical and commemorative activities, including participation in Memorial Day observances and historical programs.

Together, the directory and related content document the structure, membership, activities, and community engagement of these affiliated heritage organizations in the mid-twentieth century, as well as their role in preserving local history and fostering civic identity.
