A paper presentation discussing representations of Eastern (particularly Indian) food in selected works of Victorian fiction and in selected Victorian cookbooks. These representations are analyzed on the basis of Gothic fear, related to xenophobia, and also in relation to conceptions of the exotic. However, this paper also explores how Indian food and culture actually became fundamental to Victorian cuisine.
