This collection consists of a Diary of Gladys Terriberry: American Army Nurse, France, 1918 which was transcribed with historical background by David J. Riley. It is a transcription of a diary of Gladys Terriberry (1888-1975) who was an American U.S. Army nurse who was stationed at a base hospital in France during WWI. The Diary covers the period from February 7, 1918 through August 11, 1918. Gladys was stationed in Chaumont in the Marne Valley at the Base Hospital No. 15. She mostly wrote about "more pleasant activities and friendships" instead of "the horrors of the war."

The Marion Allan Wright Papers consist of correspondence, a journal, autobiographical writings, bibliographies, biographical data, essays, speeches, book reviews, short stories, poems, letters to the editor, oral history transcripts and other papers. Subjects include the death penalty, the civil rights movement, civil liberties, libraries in South Carolina and politics. Correspondents include R. Beverly Herbert, L. Mendel Rivers, J, William Fulbright, Sam Ervin, Jr., Reverend James P. Dees, Preston Wright (Wright's brother) and other relatives. Eliza Ragsdale Wylie (1878-1964) was a genealogist and historian from Chester County, South Carolina. The Elizabeth Ragsdale Wylie Papers consists of personal and business correspondence, financial papers, research notes, lineage charts, newspaper clippings, photographs, and other papers relating to family history and Chester County history. Much of the material concerns the ancestry of the Ragsdale, Wylie, Caldwell, Crawford, Dargan, Harrison, Thorn, and Wall families.

Colleen Cecilia Yates (1929- s.l.) was a 1950 graduate of Winthrop College and a politician and civic leader from Sumter, S.C. The Colleen Cecilia Yates Papers consist of biographical data, speeches, reports, memoranda, and newspaper clippings, mainly documenting her political activities, including her unsuccessful race against Congressman Ken Holland for the 5th district seat. Also included are some newspaper clippings relating to the Civil War and its aftermath. One clipping provides General Wade Hampton’s account of General William T. Sherman’s destruction of Columbia.

The York County Land Records collection consists of positive photocopies of land plots, deeds, and wills of Thomas D. Spratt and his family and of James McKee, Hugh White, and Robert Harris. These lands are in the same general area along the Catawba River and in the lands once belonging to the Catawba Nation. Other names mentioned in records are James Jackson, Joseph F. White, and John Merritt.

York County Lease Holders Land Plat Map - Accession 549

The York County Lease Holders Land Plat Map (69 ¾” x 48”) consists of a partial listing of people to whom grants of land, located in the Catawba Indian Boundary, were made by the commissioner of locations for York District,South Carolina during the years 1841-1842. Other grants were made upon expiration of leases as late as 1855 to surviving heirs, assignees, and transferees of earlier leaseholders. This map was prepared by Mr.& Mrs. J. Thomas Williams, Sr. from existing information obtained from plats on file in the York County Courthouse as of July 30, 1983.

One photograph depicts, the “Klan Oak” located 2 miles south of Fort Mill, Route #36. Tradition says the Ku Klux Klan in the Eastern part of York County in late 1800s gathered here. The other photograph is the school established on Saluda Street by Willie Chisholm for purpose of training black females as maids.

This collection consists of the newsletter, York County Bar Newsletter, produced for York County Bar Association (YCBA) members “to communicate items of interest to the York County Bar, including news, personnel changes, Bar Association business, and jury verdicts from the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit.”

The Rock Hill Board of Realtors was founded in 1955 to promote and maintain high standards of conduct in the real estate business and to unite those engaged in the recognized branches of the real estate business in York County for the purpose of exerting a beneficial influence upon the real estate business and related interests. In 1976 the Rock Hill Board of Realtors became the York County Board of Realtors and, in 1977, the organization was incorporated. The York County Board of Realtors, Inc. Records consist of correspondence, constitutions, bylaws, minutes, financial records, reports, program notes, reference manuals, membership records, newsletters, newspaper clippings, bulletins, and pamphlets. The records are a good source of information not only for those doing research on the York County Board of Realtors, but for those researching the South Carolina Association of Realtors.

Principle people involved in the transactions were Franklin H. Brown, Henry l. Killam, Samuel C. Youngblood, and member of the Fewell, Johnson, and Moore families.

The York County human Services Demonstration Project Report was authorized by the Chairman of the Interagency Demonstration Area Coordinating Committee, the Project Managing Authority for the York County Human Services Demonstration Project. The purpose of the project was to establish a demonstration model whereby the delivery of human services could be researched and studied in order to improve the availability, quality, and cost effectiveness of such services and to provide for a more efficient and orderly manner of service delivery.

This collection consists of a brochure York County Library 1884-1984 written by Ruth Byers and Anne Harper to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of the York County Library. The brochure details its history from Reverend James Spratt White (1841-1891) who founded the Rock Hill Public Library in 1884 up to the York County Public Library system in 1984. The publication also details the history the Palmetto Branch (1936), the York Public Library (1915), the Clover Public Library (1944), the Traveling Library (1937), and the Fort Mill Library (1964).

York County Multiethnic Heritage Project
The York County Multiethnic Heritage project, administered by Dr. Joyce Pettigrew Berman of Winthrop’s English faculty, was made possible by a $38,000 grant from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare of the U.S. Government. The purpose of the project was to study the total contributions of ethnic groups to the total cultural heritage of York County School District No. 3, the York County Nature Museum and the City of Rock Hill Recreation Department. The project, which began in July, 1976, and ended June 30, 1977, focused on ethnic groups in the area: Southern Appalachian, African-American and American Indian. The collection includes a wide variety of material that could be used for research on York County and for instructional purposes by teachers. The collection consists of magazines, newspaper clippings, books, photographs, slides, audio tapes, video cassettes, slide transparencies, and copies of historical documents such as letters and land records.

York County Nature Museum
The Children’s Nature Museum of Rock Hill, South Carolina (now called the Museum of York County) opened in 1950 as a result of a community effort led by the Junior Welfare League, to create a cultural opportunity for area children. The York County Nature Museum Records consist of bylaws, correspondence, legal and financial records, promotional materials, awards, and publications relating to the development of the museum in Rock Hill. These early organizational and developmental records were collected by Josephine B. Snypps during her tenure as chairman of the Children’s Nature Museum Committee of the Rock Hill Junior Welfare League, secretary of the Nature Museum’s (then named Rock Hill Children’s Nature Museum) Board of Directors, and treasurer of the Nature Museum.
