Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of publication which includes an article titled “Rules Relative To The Expenditure Of Appropriation For Public Night Schools For Adults” written by John Eldred Swearingen (1875-1957), State Superintendent of Education. This article lists ways to create strong programs for nontraditional students in the hopes of raising the percentage of literate adults in South Carolina. Also included is an article titled “To the Teachers Interested in Adult Work” by Wil Lou Gray(1883-1984), Supervisor Adult Schools which was approved and issued by J.E. Swearingen. This article is geared towards teachers of adult students and offers suggestions on how to teach this demographic. At the back of this publication there is a list of suggested books for adult pupils.
