Historical Note

Hamilton James Eckenrode [H. J. Eckenrode] (1879-1952) was a Virginia historian, archivist, educator, editor, and author. He worked for the Virginia State Library, Tempe Normal School of Arizona, Richmond College, B. F. Johnson Publishing Co., and was Virginia state historian among other positions.

Scope and Content Note

List of the Colonial Soldiers of Virginia was compiled by Archivist H. J. Eckenrode in a Special Report of the Virginia Department of Archives and History for 1913. The state published the list in 1917. The list comprises approximately 6700 names and lists the source where the name was found. For a list of the sources, please see the attached Preface.

Provenance

Winthrop purchased the book from National Bibliophile in 1934 for $4.50.
