Historical Note
Amherst County was formed from Albemarle County and "certain islands in the Fluvanna River" in 1761. It was named for Sir Jeffrey Amherst who was known as the "Conqueror of Canada."
Scope and Content Note
Marriage Bonds and Other Marriage Records of Amherst County, Virginia 1763-1800 compiled by William Montgomery Sweeny list the marriages in the county. The volume contains the names of the couples, the date, the surety, and by whose consent the couple was married. The bonds are arranged alphabetically by the names of the men. The index is arranged alphabetically by the names of the women. Please see the attached scan of the index.
