Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of a microfilm reel containing copies of the York District and York County Letters of Administration, Administration with Will Annexed, Guardianship, and Testamentary Book dating from 1860 to 1870. The original records are held by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.
The records document probate proceedings relating to the administration and settlement of estates in York District and York County during the mid-nineteenth century. Included are letters of administration, letters testamentary, guardianship appointments, and records of administration with will annexed issued by the probate court. These records typically identify deceased individuals, executors, administrators, guardians, heirs, and securities, and may contain information concerning family relationships, residences, estate responsibilities, and the legal authority granted to manage estates and guardianships.
The collection spans the transition created by the South Carolina Constitution of 1868, when judicial districts were redesignated as counties. As a result, earlier entries identify the jurisdiction as York District, while later records refer to York County.
This collection provides valuable documentation for genealogical, legal, and historical research and offers insight into inheritance practices, probate administration, guardianship proceedings, and family networks in nineteenth-century South Carolina.
Title of the reel: York District 1860-1868, York County 1868-1870, Letters of Administration, Administration with Will Annexed, Guardianship, and Testamentary Book, 1860-1870.
