Scope and Content Note
The Emmett Scott High School Panoramic Print Collection consists of a single panoramic photograph taken during a 1922 summer school session at Emmett Scott School in Rock Hill. The image depicts faculty, staff, and students assembled on campus, providing a visual record of the school community in its early years.
Emmett Scott School opened in 1920 as the first public school in Rock Hill established specifically for African American students, following sustained advocacy by local Black citizens for access to public education. Named in honor of Emmett J. Scott, the school initially served all grade levels and became an important educational institution within the community. It was accredited by the state and began awarding high school diplomas in 1934, later achieving membership in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
By the mid-twentieth century, the institution evolved to focus on secondary education, and in 1956 Emmett Scott High School was designated to serve junior and senior high school grades. The school operated as a segregated institution until 1970, when public schools in South Carolina were desegregated.
This panoramic print documents an early moment in the history of Emmett Scott School and offers valuable insight into African American education, community life, and the development of public schooling in Rock Hill during the era of segregation.
