Emmett Scott School

Emmett Scott High School (1920–1970) Emmett Scott High School was established in 1920 as Rock Hill’s public school for African American students during segregation. Before its founding, Black students attended underfunded, church-supported schools with limited resources. After years of petitions from local Black citizens, a 1919 bond issue funded construction of a combined grammar and high school. The new two-story building opened in December 1920, with Frank H. Neal as its first principal. Named for Emmett J. Scott, an educator and associate of Booker T. Washington, the school reflected strong community pride and support. Its first graduating class in 1923 included eleven students. By 1934, the school was accredited to grant state diplomas, and it later achieved full accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1963–64. Enrollment grew steadily, reaching 195 graduates in 1966. For fifty years, Emmett Scott High School served as a center of education and community life for Rock Hill’s Black citizens until it closed in 1970 following school desegregation.
