Biographical Note
Mary Kate Bell Brearley Glasser graduated from Winthrop College and received an M.Ed. in Exceptional Children from the University of South Carolina. She taught high school business, kindergarten, and special education before becoming the first principal of a school for children with special needs. She was honored as South Carolina Exceptional Educator of the Year. Mary Kate was the wife of Presbyterian minister Cecil Brearley for 52 years and the mother of four children and ten grandchildren. Their home was always open for children, prayer groups, meetings, Bible studies, parties, and even weddings. She served on the Board of Visitors of Presbyterian College and as President of the state organization of Delta Kappa Gamma. Mrs. Glasser's friend's words summarized her joy in being a mother: "The joy of her life is her family, and she cherishes the times they are all together." Mary Kate left the following “words of wisdom for posterity” on her nomination form, “Love the Lord and all His children. Count your blessings and be thankful. Do your best and never give up.” Mary Kate's philosophy of parenting emphasized teaching by example: “I always tried to live like I wanted my children to follow. I taught my children to love learning and to make use of every opportunity that came their way. All I expected was for each one to do his best. Faith and education can never be taken away from our children. We need to listen to our children and encourage, support, and praise them.”
