Abstract
This interview was conducted by Dr. Joseph Prus with Dr. Mary Wylie "Polly" Ford as part of the Emeriti Faculty Oral History Project at Winthrop University. Dr. Ford reflects on her lifelong connection to Winthrop, beginning as a student in the Winthrop Training School, continuing through her undergraduate education, and culminating in a 32-year career as a faculty member in the Department of Physical Education from 1960 to 1992. She discusses her educational background, her return to Winthrop as a faculty member, and the informal hiring practices of the period. Dr. Ford describes the evolution of the Physical Education Department, including its academic programs, graduate curriculum, and expanding responsibilities in recreation and athletics after she became department chair. She also recalls physical education requirements for students, faculty life, curriculum development, and the growth of the department. Throughout the interview, she reflects on the accomplishments of former students, the importance of internships and leadership opportunities, her service to the university after retirement, and her vision for expanding health and fitness initiatives at Winthrop.
