Scope and Content Note
The Joshua LeLand Abell Family Papers consists of an account ledger for a store owned by E. H Abell (most likely Ephraim Henry Abell (1812-1889)) in Lowrysville, SC (now known as Lowrys, SC) and a photograph album which includes Abell family photographs, most of which are unidentified. The account ledger gives a sampling of everyday life at the turn of the century in Chester County such as costs of various items and services and is also a great source for names of various Chester County residents.
Ephraim Henry Abell was the father of Joshua Leland Abell, Sr. (1876-1897). Joshua Leland Abell, Sr. had several children with one being Charlie Boyd Abell (1885-1975) who had child named Joshua Leland Abell (1914-1969). This son married Winthrop professor Helen Barksdale Somerville Abell (1923-2004) on June 4, 1945 (divorced September 25, 1967) who donated the collection in 1984.
Provenance
The Joshua Leland Abell Family Papers were deposited with the Archives in May, 1984, by Helen Abell, Assistant Professor of Special Education at Winthrop College.
