Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of bound volumes, family Bibles, lecture and financial notebooks, diaries, scrapbooks, photographs, magazines, publications, and memorabilia collected or owned by members of the White family and related families. The White family, descendants of George Pendleton and Ann Hutchinson White, was among the founding families of Rock Hill, South Carolina, and played a significant role in the development and history of the community. The family’s historical presence in Rock Hill is also reflected in the White Home, one of the early homes constructed in the city and now a local historic attraction, and White Street in downtown Rock Hill, which was named in honor of the family. The collection documents several generations of the White family and includes materials associated with the Lindsay and Hutchinson families, as well as other individuals. Materials date primarily from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with some items dating from the eighteenth and twentieth centuries.

The collection includes family Bibles and genealogical materials, handwritten lecture notes from South Carolina College, financial records, diaries, and scrapbooks containing photographs of family members, Rock Hill and Yorkville, South Carolina, local events, military camps, and other locations. Materials relating to Freemasonry include histories, encyclopedias, proceedings, and other publications, as well as a Grand Master pin belonging to A.H. White. The collection also contains publications and memorabilia relating to Winthrop College, including a 1907 Winthrop College Bulletin, a 1921 historical pageant program, and Perihelion Club yearbooks.

Additional materials include nineteenth- and twentieth-century magazines and literary publications, Civil Air Regulations for Pilots, community club materials, photographs of the 1904-1905 Fishing Creek train wreck, and several games and objects associated with the White family. Collectively, the materials provide insight into the educational, family, social, cultural, and community lives of the White family and their connections to Rock Hill and the surrounding region.
