Scope and Content Note

The Susan Huffman Pruitt Collection consists of materials documenting Pruitt’s experiences as a student at Winthrop College and her continued involvement with the institution as an alumna. Pruitt (1919-2015) graduated from Winthrop College in 1940. The collection includes three bound volumes of Winthrop College’s Tatler yearbooks from 1937-1939, Winthrop publications, newspapers and newspaper clippings, alumni and class reunion materials, photographs, and miscellaneous items.

The collection provides insight into student life at Winthrop College during the late 1930s and early 1940s. The Tatler yearbooks and other Winthrop publications document campus activities, student organizations, events, and other aspects of college life. Photographs further document student activities, campus views, May Day in 1940, and other events and locations at Winthrop.

The collection also documents Pruitt’s continued connection to Winthrop as an alumna, particularly through activities involving the Class of 1940. Alumni and reunion materials, newspapers and clippings, and photographs document alumni events, including alumni weekends and reunions held from the 1950s through the 1990s. Miscellaneous materials include a Winthrop College handbook, a program for the 1940 Annual Sermon for the Young Women’s Christian Association, correspondence, and a list of alumni and their graduation years.

The materials date primarily from 1937 through 1990, with additional materials dating from 2012, and provide a view of Winthrop student life in the years surrounding Pruitt’s graduation as well as the enduring connections among members of the Winthrop College Class of 1940.
