Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of three reels of microfilm containing copies of the papers of Edward C. Tabler held at Yale University. The microfilm was created in 1982 from the original collection, Edward C. Tabler Papers (MS 1317), housed in the Manuscripts and Archives division at Yale University. Edward C. Tabler (1916–1977) was an Africanist, historian, collector, and author whose work focused primarily on the early history of southern Africa, particularly South Africa and Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).
The collection is composed primarily of correspondence, research materials, notes, bibliographies, and manuscript transcripts related to Tabler’s historical research and publications. More than half of the material consists of letters sent to Tabler from correspondents in Africa, England, and the United States concerning the research, editing, and publication of writings on the exploration and settlement of southern Africa. Correspondence includes exchanges with scholars, collectors, descendants of explorers and settlers, and individuals possessing family papers, diaries, and historical accounts that Tabler sought to trace and preserve. Some letters contain hand-drawn maps of southern Africa, while others enclose copies of historical correspondence and receipts dating from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The collection also documents Tabler’s interests in Africana, antiquarian book collecting, and big game hunting. Additionally, correspondence reflects contemporary political discussions regarding Rhodesia and South Africa from the 1950s through the 1970s, particularly from the perspective of white settlers and citizens during periods of governmental and social change.
Additional materials include loose-leaf notebooks of research notes and bibliographies compiled by Tabler, typed transcripts of nineteenth-century diaries and manuscripts relating to southern Africa, biographical materials, reviews and bibliographies of Tabler’s publications, newspaper clippings, photographs, and other miscellaneous documents.
Provenance
The Edward C. Tabler Papers were donated to the Archives by Dr. James A. Casada on October 23, 1997.
