Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of a microfilm reel containing copies of the York District and York County Administration, Administration with Will Annexed, and Guardian Bond Books dating from 1840 to 1875. The original records are held by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.

The records document probate and estate administration proceedings in York District and York County during the mid-nineteenth century. Included are administration bonds, administration with will annexed bonds, and guardian bonds filed with the court in connection with the settlement of estates and the appointment of guardians for minors and dependents. These records typically identify administrators, guardians, securities, deceased individuals, heirs, and wards, and may include information concerning residences, family relationships, estate obligations, and financial responsibilities.

The collection reflects changes in South Carolina’s judicial system following the South Carolina Constitution of 1868, when judicial districts were redesignated as counties. As a result, later entries identify the jurisdiction as York County rather than York District.

These records provide valuable documentation for genealogical, legal, and local historical research, particularly for the study of family relationships, inheritance practices, guardianship proceedings, and estate administration in nineteenth-century South Carolina.
