Scope and Content Note

The Carowinds Letter Collection consists of two documents related to the expansion of Carowinds. The collection includes a letter dated September 8, 1988, addressed to park employees, and a news release dated September 9, 1988, announcing plans to expand the park with the addition of a water-themed attraction later known as Riptide Reef. The proposed expansion featured new attractions, including two 350-foot racing tube-raft rides, two 52-foot racing water slides, and a themed children’s area.

Carowinds, which opened to the public on March 31, 1973, is a large amusement park located along the North Carolina–South Carolina state line, adjacent to Interstate 77, with portions of the Park extending into Fort Mill.

This collection documents internal communication and public promotion surrounding a significant development in the evolution of Carowinds, illustrating broader trends in amusement park expansion and diversification during the late twentieth century.
