Scope and Content Note

The Manchester Cotton Mill Panoramic Print Collection consists of a single panoramic photograph dating from the 1920s depicting the Manchester Cotton Mill in Rock Hill. The image captures the mill complex and surrounding area during a significant period in the city’s industrial development.

Located on the north side of present-day Dave Lyle Boulevard at the corner of Curtis and Quantz Streets, Manchester Cotton Mill was constructed in 1895 and began operations in 1896. Early leadership and development of the mill are associated with John R. Barron and R. T. Fewell. Following financial difficulties, the company declared bankruptcy in 1920. The property was later acquired by J. P. Stevens Company, which became the sole owner in 1948, after which the facility operated as the J. P. Stevens Textile Mill.

This panoramic print provides visual documentation of a major textile enterprise and offers insight into the industrial and economic history of Rock Hill in the early twentieth century.
