Scope and Content Note
The Samuel B. Morgan’s Store Ledger consists of a single bound ledger documenting the business activities of Samuel B. Morgan’s general store in Chester, South Carolina, in 1909. The volume records day-to-day commercial transactions and provides a detailed snapshot of retail trade in a small South Carolina community in the early twentieth century.
The ledger is associated with Samuel Berry Morgan (1862–1935), a merchant born in North Carolina who later resided in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where he is buried at Laurelwood Cemetery. Entries list customer names alongside items purchased, quantities, and, in some cases, prices or account balances. The inventory reflects the range of goods typically sold in a general or grocery store of the period, including staples such as bacon, onions, sugar, salt, tobacco, lard, tomatoes, potatoes, and other household necessities.
In addition to documenting merchandise and stock, the ledger serves as a valuable source for social and local history. The frequent appearance of customer names provides insight into the residents of Chester and the surrounding area at the time, making the volume useful for genealogical research and studies of community networks. Overall, the ledger offers evidence of consumer habits, economic conditions, and daily life in a South Carolina town in the early 1900s.
