Scope and Content Note

The collection contains photographs, scrapbooks, memorabilia, and personal papers documenting the lives of the McCall siblings of Chester, South Carolina: Clyde C. McCall (1917–1979), Ernest W. McCall (1909–1993), Hazel Janet McCall Windham (1911–2011), Ruth McCall Ward (b. 1919; married John Vernon Ward on January 6, 1940), Mary Lou McCall Elliott (1904–1991), and Chalmers S. McCall (1907–1965). Their parents were Ernest Walton McCall (1882-1937) and Flonnie L. Horton McCall (1883-1966).

Scrapbooks compiled by Hazel, Ruth, and Mary Lou provide insight into the culture and daily experiences of high school–aged and young adult women during the 1920s and 1930s. These scrapbooks include memorabilia from dances, parties, and other social events, as well as publicity photographs of cultural figures such as Rudolph Valentino.

A significant portion of the collection relates to the military service and personal life of Chalmers McCall from roughly 1940 until his death in 1965. The collection also contains several notable vintage postcards and holiday cards.

Provenance

The McCall Family Papers were donated to the Winthrop University Louise Pettus Archives by Peggy Breakfield. They were discovered in the attic of a house in Chester, South Carolina, by a subsequent homeowner.
