Historical Note
The Newcomers Club is a social as well as a service club of Rock Hill, SC founded in 1960 as the Meet and Greet Club. The club changed its name to the Newcomers Club in 1970. The purpose of the club is the development of friendship among new residents of the area and their assimilation into the social and civic life of the community. The Newcomers Club will also undertake and promote within the community one or more charitable, humanitarian or social welfare projects as proposed by the Executive Committee each year. Additionally, The Newcomers Club will provide moral, physical, and emotional support for local charities on a continuing basis.
Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of 18 scrapbooks documenting the activities of the Newcomers Club of Rock Hill, South Carolina, from 1985 to 2012, with gaps in coverage. The Newcomers Club, originally organized in 1960 as the Meet and Greet Club, is a social and service organization established to foster friendships among new residents of the Rock Hill area and encourage their participation in the social and civic life of the community. The club also supports local charitable, humanitarian, and social welfare organizations and projects.
The scrapbooks contain photographs, newspaper and other news clippings, monthly newsletters, correspondence, invitations, pamphlets, flyers, programs, schedules, club bylaws, membership lists, lists of past presidents and Carol Fields Award recipients, and picture negatives. The materials document the club's social activities, meetings, events, community involvement, leadership, membership, and charitable and service activities. The collection also includes materials relating to the club's 30th and 40th anniversaries, as well as occasional items concerning individuals and organizations associated with the Rock Hill community.
Provenance
The Newcomers Club scrapbooks were deposited with Winthrop University Archives and Special Collections on April 5, 1994, from Ms. Mary Waldron. On September 23, 2005, 7 more scrapbooks were donated by Nancy Grimm of Rock Hill, SC 29732. Two more volumes were donated on July 26, 2012 by Judith Marriott.
