Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of materials relating to the personal and professional life of Rev. Cecil Augustus Ivory (1921-1961), a notable Rock Hill minister and civil rights leader. Included are essays, handwritten notes, and correspondence relating to his studies at Mary Allen Junior College and Johnson C. Smith University, the latter where he met his future wife Emily Richardson Ivory (1925-2008); several of their letters are included. Other notable items are records relating to the ministerial work of Rev. Ivory including church bulletins, financial reports, religious texts, and other materials pertaining to the Herman Presbyterian Church and the UPCUSA, United Presbyterian Church in the USA. Of most interest is the correspondence, newspaper clippings, financial records, programs, and call-to-actions concerning Rev. Ivory’s civil rights efforts, including his work with the Local Committee for the Promotion of Human Rights, the NAACP, and Rock Hill’s local movements (1957 Bus Boycott, 1960-61 sit-ins, and Freedom Rides). Other items include Kennedy for President (1960) campaign memorabilia and an early twentieth-century Winthrop College Chapel hymn book.

Provenance

The Reverend Cecil A. Ivory Papers were gifted to the Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections by Ms. Darnell Ivory, the daughter of Rev. Ivory. The first part of the collection was received in February 2020; a later addition was donated by the Hermon Presbyterian Church on behalf of the Ivory Family in August 2021.
