Historical Note

Dr. Allen D. Edwards (1905-2004) was a Winthrop College professor and served as Chairman of the Winthrop College Sociology Department from 1944 through 1971. Dr. Edwards was active in the formation of the Social Service Workers Club was a charter member of the Optimist Club of Rock Hill, SC. He also served as State Director of the AARP from 1983 through 1986 and for five years was the Dean of the since defunct Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill, SC.

Scope and Content Note

The American Association of Retired Persons Records (AARP): Catawba Chapter consists of material related to the organization collected by Dr. Allen D. Edwards and Esther “Peggy” Edwards. The Catawba Chapter (1416), based in York County, SC, was chartered on October 15, 1973 and Dr. Allen David Edwards (1905-2004) was one of the founding members and served as the organization’s second president. Dr. Edwards is a former professor and chair of the sociology department at Winthrop College from 1944-1971. Dr. Edwards wife, Esther Grace Hoy “Peggy” Edwards (1907-1997) was also a member and wrote a history of the chapter (1-2). These records include secretary minutes of club meetings, club histories, club member directories, club rules, calendar of events, advertisements, correspondence, fundraiser coupon book, financial records, news clippings, citations, certificates, and empty envelopes.

The Dr. and Mrs. Allen Edwards Papers were donated to the Archives by Dr. Allen Edwards on June 10, 1998.
