This collection consists of two microfilm reels containing twenty-nine ledgers listing the names of free blacks who resided in Charleston, SC between approximately 1811 and 1860. Most of the residents in the microfilm lived in the St. Phillips and St. Michaels parishes and are listed alphabetically by year. Years included in the microfilm are: 1811; 1821; 1822; 1823; 1826; 1827; 1832; 1833; 1834; 1835; 1836; 1837; 1838; 1839; 1840; 1841; 1842; 1843; 1844; 1845; 1846; 1848; 1849; 1850; 1851; 1852; 1855; 1857; 1860; The original books are housed at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History in Columbia, SC.
