Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of a one volumes mathematics notebook with various mathematic word problems and calculations that was owned by Thomas Carrot. The name name Thomas Carrot is found written throughout the book and on a few occasions mentions he is “aged 10 years” in 1840. 1840 is listed several times throughout the volume and there is one entry stating 1860. The handwriting, style, and ink appears the same throughout the book and seems continuous. The math problems and lessons appear to have been taught by several different teachers in very different locations. Most of the entries state Hogsthorpe (in one case stated Agsthorpe) which is a village in Lincolnshire, England. A couple of the teachers that signed the students work are Mrs. Hy Vickers of Lincolnshire, Mrs. Fred Daniel of Sergeants Bluff, Woodbury County, Iowa, Mrs. T. R. Carrit of Castana, Monoa County, Iowa, and Jacob A. Westerwalt. While most of the entries appear to have taken place in England, there are also entries from Iowa and Elkhorn in Walworth County, Wisconsin. There are many other names listed in the volume which are presumably teachers, but some a difficult to discern. Some signatures may be relatives as well including John Carrott, James Carrott, Jabez Carrott, Mary Ann Carrott, and Elizabeth Carrott. The mathematics covered in this notebook include sections on: Cloth Measure; Weights; Reduction; Bills of Parcels; Multiplication; Long Measure; Wine Measure; Ale and Beer Measure; Dry Measure; The Single Rule of Three; The Double Rule of Three; and Tare and Tret;
