Historical Note

Billy Austin Shepherd [1930- ] worked at Winthrop part-time 1976-1978 and full time Dec 1978 to 1980. He was Director of Placement and Career Planning and an Assistant Professor of Management. Shepherd is a native of Fayette, Alabama and graduated from University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa-1958 (B.S.-Industrial and Personnel Management), the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary-1960 (M.R.E.-Psychology) and Winthrop College-1982 (M.S.-Business Administration). He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951-1954.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of a narrative and images relating to Billy Austin Shepherd’s time in the United States Navy from 1951-1954 and discusses boot camp, deployment to Guam, and some of his military experiences up until he with his marriage to Martha. This Collection also includes two United States flags, of differing sizes (placed in oversize, drawer 26 folder 100, item 679), from his years working at the “Bleachery” (Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Company) and an Army song book titled, Army Song Book: compiled by The Adjunct General’s Office in Collaboration with The Library of Congress and Published by the Order of the Secretary of War, that he received when he entered the service.
