Amy Jacques-Garvey: Black Feminism and the Pan-Nationalist Movement
Abstract
A. Jacques Garvey worked tirelessly as a campaigner, organizer, fundraiser, secretary, publicist, and agitator. During the course of her life she published, edited, and wrote countless speeches, newspaper articles, poems, books and made an immeasurable contribution to the conceptualization and dissemination of Marcus Garvey’s philosophy.
In using Jacqueline Jones Royster’s Afrafeminist methodology we will analyze the role of race, gender, and culture within A. Jacques Garvey’s article “The Role Women in Liberation Struggles”. This feminist historiography of A. Jacques Garvey will examine how patriarchal research methods have overlooked or misconstrued her role in the Black nationalist movement, perform a rhetorical analysis, and finally note the implications for modern Black feminists.
