Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections

Rare Books

 

The Archives is responsible for acquiring, identifying, managing, and preserving books deemed to fit the under the collection policy for Winthrop Rare Books. The criteria for what constitutes a “Rare Book” for the Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections are as follows:

    • All books printed before 1810
    • Books printed in the United States before 1875
    • South Carolina imprints 1940 or before
    • Books costing the library more than $300, or having a similar auction value
    • First editions of significance
    • Books in original form printed in numbered editions of 500 or less
    • Autograph copies of works presented to Winthrop or one of its departments by Winthrop’s faculty, staff or alumni
    • Works by important local authors
    • Confederate imprints
    • Association copies, i.e., works inscribed to Winthrop University. In certain discretionary circumstances books inscribed to Winthrop faculty, staff and alumni can also be put in Special Collections
    • Other books that the Archives may subjectively believe to be a rare book
    • Books subject to loss or damage, including:
    • items of poor or fragile condition
    • volumes or portfolios of loose or fine plates

    A slim but poignant volume of poetry, Lyrics of Love: Sacred and Secular was published in 1904 by the State Company Publishers. In the preface of the book, Charles Dinkins writes "…I offer this little volume to the consideration of those who may feel disposed to join me in my humble lays, with the earnest hope that it may be to them what it has been to me—a source of real comfort and a delightful recreation. . . . I have written a few hundred poems and hymns, if such they are worthy to be called, and of these a few choice selections are given.” Please see the attached Table of Contents and photographs.

    On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason is an elaboration on the classical Principle of Sufficient Reason written by German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer as his doctoral dissertation in 1813. The principle of sufficient reason is a powerful and controversial philosophical principle stipulating that everything must have a reason or cause. On the Will in Nature is an essay by Schopenhauer that skillfully employs the queries and findings of the rapidly expanding natural sciences in support of his theory of the will. These essays were translated by Madame Karl Hillebrand. Please see the attached Contents pages.

    Scott's Official History of the American Negro in the World War by Emmett J. Scott is "a complete and authentic narration from official sources of the participation of American soldiers of the Negro race in the World War for democracy. It is "profusely illustrated with official photographs." The work is "a full account of the war work organizations of colored men and women and other civilian activities including the Red Cross, the Y. M. C. A., the Y. W. C. A. and the War Camp Community Service with official summary of the Treaty of Peace and the League of Nations Covenant." Please see the attached scans of the Contents and Selected Illustrations.

    William Gilmore Simms wrote The Geography of South Carolina as an accompaniment work for his History of South Carolina. The book covers the physical and natural aspects of the state of South Carolina. Simms also adds historical and cultural items to each of his entries.     James Henley Thornwell preached this sermon on the occasion of the death of Benjamin R. Maybin, a member of the Freshman Class of South Carolina College on October 9, 1842. In it he encourages the students to eschew the vanity of earthly pursuits and place their hope and faith on the promise of God's eternal blessings. Thornwell based this sermon on the Scripture Job 14: 10.

    The Code of Honor lays out the rules and duties of the principal participants of a duel as well as their seconds. Chapter titles include: "The Person Insulted, Before Challenge Sent," "Second's Duty Before Challenge Sent," "Duty of Challengee and His Second Before Fighting, " and "Duty of Principals and Seconds on the Ground." The author, John Lyde Wilson (1784-1849) was a lawyer, politician and the 49th governor of South Carolina serving from 1822 to 1824.
