Historical Note
John Pentland Mahaffy (1839-1919) was an Irish scholar, clergyman, philologist, Egyptologist, and musicologist. He held a chair in Ancient History at Trinity College, Dublin 1871-1914. He became the Provost in 1914. He was a great wit and was regarded as a curmudgeon. John Henry Bernard (1860-1927) was an Irish Anglican clergyman and scholar. He served as Dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin; Bishop of Ossory, Ferns and Leighlin; and Archbisop of Dublin. in 1919 he was appointed Provost of Trinity College serving until 1927.
