Historical Note
Hugh Swinton Legare was born on January 2, 1797 in Charleston, S.C. He graduated from South Carolina College in 1814 and, after studying law and doing post graduate work in Paris and Edinburgh, was admitted to the S.C. bar in 1822. He was a member of the SC House of Representatives, S.C. Attorney General, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Charge D'affaires to Belgium, and U.S. Attorney General. He died at the age of 46 on June 20, 1843.
